A follow up question, turns out Shimano in their infinite wisdom designed a 1x11 crank that isn't compatible with anything smaller than 30T.  So Wolf Tooth makes a 45T cog I could add but I'd still need to buy a 30T chainring.  Alternatively, I could buy another crankset that allows smaller rings up front and keep my 11x42 cassette in place.  An affordable option would be preferred but this is my first attempt at the CT so do want to set myself up for success.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: GPX Track Elevation Profile
If you pulled down Toby's GPX file and noticed that there isn't any elevation data to show a profile, use TopoFusion to "Correct elevation using EDM", which is under "File Properties" when you right-click the track.

@GeorgeHD,
Guess you are getting down to the wire and have limited options. There's always the 2X option, if your bike can mount a FD. A relatively cheap and lightweight 1X or 2X convertible crank is the Race Face Aeffect, which I think can use down to a 26T chainring, if you use a direct mount spider as a 1X crank. Best bang for the buck Shimano double is probably the SLX crank. Then there's the complication of your BB - 24/30mm... pressfit, threaded... chainline... Hopefully a good shop can help you wade thru all the options...

Hi,
Sorry for the rookie question, but how early should one show up at Waterton Canyon to pick up a Spot Rental.

Thank you and good luck to all,
Ben

Thanks, Yogi.  I'm doing an ITT and going to start a little bit later so have some time.  I also have my old 3x set up which I could throw back on too.

Thanks, Yogi.  I'm doing an ITT and going to start a little bit later so have some time.  I also have my old 3x set up which I could throw back on too.

I have done the CT twice before and both times with far worse gear ratio's than 30  X 11X42.  This year I am in the same boat as you are...running m8000 xt groupset and it doesn't allow for a 28T.  I looked at all different options out there and the consensus was for the money I would just stick with your 30T in front.  That is what I am going to do at least.

I think if your bike isn't too heavy you should be alright.  If you are riding a 150mm bike and bringing a stove and stuff then yeah I would run a 2X or 3X.  On some of the climbs you will be wishing you had the 28T in front or 45T rear cog but I believe you can complete the thing without having to spend the extra cash.  Maybe a little more HAB but then it comes down to your expectations of the race/expected finish times.  Also running 3X is going to increase your weight a good bit.

I believe Stefan is usually there about an hour before the start.  No need to be any earlier than that.  Just have your 4xAAA lithium batteries handy so you can drop them in and engage tracking mode.

Thanks.

I will try to get there around 5am and park conspicuously under a light to hand out the SPOTs. I'll either be in a black Jetta wagon or a bright red Ford Ranger.

As usual you guys need a sweep.  I'm on my way down this afternoon after work. Really looking forward to the third leg of what I like to call the wstc (working stiffs triple crown) comprised of AZT 300, Dixie 200 & CTR. Now if I could just get third lung implant I'd be set! See y'all at the start

Scott,
Any chance you could add the Leadville bypass to the trackleaders map?  Just so the folks who choose to use the bypass don't end up getting their phone blown up by all their friends who think they have gone off course.
I've drawn it out in ridewithgps so you can download the gpx here https://ridewithgps.com/routes/15271087

thanks.

But you will miss the benefit from a quick caffeine 'n' burrito fix at City on a Hill Coffee Shop, right on Main Street!

...folks who choose to use the [Leadville] bypass...

Anybody mind if I go ahead and create a new thread, titled 2016 CTR - Race Discussion, so some of us can go ahead and provide a link to fam and friends?
Feel free to keep posting to this thread, until the start... -Barry

A cheat sheet I made up for 2014, which should be almost identical for this year. I'm human and might have made mistakes. Use at your own risk, yada, yada...

Just to clarify, the Leadville bypass is a legit option, but you will miss ALL resupply option in that area?  Thanks

Almost.  There's a pretty big gas station / store about a half mile off route, just east of where the alternate comes back to the main route.  You miss the safeway, cafes, etc, though.

I suspect slow-pokes like me just need to go through town and get our food fix. Thanks Scott.
