Gotta love the cat's claw and all the other plants which poke, stab, scratch and attack the body.
Photo: My right shin after a bath in the Gila [background]. Sweated while sleeping last night, but haven't had to amputate yet. I think the Gila is 1-part mine tailing silt, 1-part cattle dung and 1-part water. Dr. Bronner's soap doesn't produce much suds with that water. Fingers crossed I don't get giardia. Even filtered, the water tasted like crap.

Barry -- super cool photo of the tarantula hawk. I've only see that once in my tenure in the desert.
Neil is dropping down into the canyon. If he holds it together, it looks like a shattering of the record is imminent.
Jason Murrell, our late ITT in the 750, is calling it quits at a Picketpost/300 finish. He cited respiratory issues, seemingly a bit of a theme this year.

Great writeup and pic Barry!
We seem to have a decent population of tarantula hawks and tarantulas in San diego, so I've been fortunate to see that battle a few times. Still waiting to see a Gila monster though, which we don't have!
Congrats to everyone who finished the 300. Looks like there are some more 750 riders getting close to Picketpost.

Elliot Dumont - I was told his three goals for the AZTR were: 1) Don't take off the tutu. 2) Have fun. 3) Drink a Tecate at every possible stop. In this photo, he appears to be succeeding at all three in Sonoita.
Mike Prochaska and I rolled into Picketpost together.
Mike Barklow (?) rolling thru Picketpost. Mike, Jason Wolf and I did the misery-loves-company thing across Oracle Ridge.
Mike P. snapped my Picketpost finish photo.
Senor Chile del Diablo and I had a great time together. Friend of mine, Ralph Wrons, did me a great favor by icing down the beer in the cooler prior to my finish.

Looks like another HOT day for the lowlands. I see a high of around 100 yesterday for Apache Junction. That is brutal for our heroes that have been out on the trail for 6 days at this point.
Mad props to heroes like Ron Thomson and Mike Kunneke, who survived that heat to wrap up the 300, and will be facing it again today on the Apache Trail.
Gotta give a shout out to Don Stump, who is somewhat of a beginner rider with some incredible determination.
Jack the unicyclist is on Oracle Ridge, probably making better time than some of our riders did!
Neil Beltchenko is facing 4000 feet of straight up, before he can reassemble his bike and ride away on what can only be described as a victory lap. With the paved snow detour that is allowed, it's comparatively an easy coast in to the finish once you crest the north rim. Granted, it's a coast with a trashed and sore body, but a coast nonetheless. We may see him finish by sunset tonight, which would shave nearly a day off Kurt's 2010 record (!).

I caught a few of the riders yesterday as they were making their way from Jake's Corner and up the nice steep hill to Payson.
Riley Barclay aka Worldklunker was looking great and in good spirits. He did mention that the first 300 miles were a bit of a beating and he seems to have picked up some more speed.
John Schilling was a bit further back, but he was looking good as well. He mentioned he was excited about hotel and shower in Payson for the night. Can't blame him.
Sarah Jansen was walking with her bike due to her mechanical. My understanding was that bike parts would arrive today in Payson. She was in a good mood all considered.

Amazing how cactus-free the first 50-60 miles of the course is. Live oak reminds me of the TX Hill Country and the tall, dead grass the West Coast, but without a Pacific Ocean over the horizon.
I will say/tease that the last segment climbing up towards the final awesome sweeping descent to the Utah State Line really reminded me of TX Hill Country. The scrub oak and steep/ledgy almost limestone terrain. North of Jacob Lake also has the really refreshing decent out of the pines and into the grassland via a creekbed canyon. |
