hey i don't see any campgrounds that are really close to the start for this, so i guess i am going to be looking at a hotel for the night before and whichever night i get done. the ones close to the start are expensive and the cheaper ones are a little drive in the AM....is anyone else needing to use a hotel also that would like to share or something? i would rather get one with outside door access so we can come/go as we want with extra people and our bike stuff, etc.
or if anyone already has something i can pitch in on? thanks, ruth.
If you're comfortable splitting a room with a guy, I'd be ok with that. I'm driving in from central Ohio but I probably won't be there until late, probably after 10:00 PM. The Collegiate (Holiday) Inn has two double beds for $117.

I regret that I will not be able to make this mass start. Espexially since it looks like at least one other ohio guy is going.  Would have been nice to ride with some more ultra-endurance nutters from the midwest. Alas to much going on this fall and I just got back from a two week bikepacking/touring trip out west.

Will be following along closely, am there in spirit if not in presence.  I hope you will all post here freuently and be sure to include lots of photos.  I especially would love to see what gear many of you are bringing and what you're riding. Perhaps though I'm not going I will post a link or two to my photos and trip report out west. I scored an upgrade to a titanium Salsa Fargo just weeks before I left. Getting hit by a car does have its silver linings. Paid for with broken toe, soft tissue damage and road rash earlier this summer, but am back on my game now.

For those of you using the ACA maps, I have created a cue sheet based on their maps/cues.  http://almaxey.com/aml400/AML400_Cues.xls  there is a column for the mileage on that particular map (or cutoff) and for the entire route.

This was all copy paste so I do not warranty the cue sheets in any way, I could have made errors.  I recommend checking it first, or downloading it and making it your own with color coding and services, etc...

Good luck - I hope to see you all at the start.

Mike... you want me to remove you from the start list?

Is anyone interested in grabbing breakfast and having a quick meet and greet before the 8:00 AM start?

I'm thinking the Starbucks is right across the street from Kroger and would be a great place to hand out the SPOT rentals... just a thought.

What does everyone think...

What time Chris?  I know at the stagecoach race SPOT handout took a while, particularly getting all of them on and tracking. They all had to have batteries and be up and tracking before they could get them on the trackleaders site - it required a few phone calls and some coordination.

What about a rider meeting/beer the night before?  Is anyone else gathering the night before?

The night before sounds great to me.  I'm not totally familiar with all the options along Univ. City Blvd. But I do know there's a Starbucks.  I'd be happy to meet everyone there, but I'm open to suggestions.  I won't be arriving into Blacksburg until around 6pm that evening...

I'll send out an email to everyone with specific time and meeting place early next week...

Thanks Chris, and thanks for specifying the University Blvd Kroger/Starbucks.  There is another on S. Main street but I couldn't find the starbucks across the street....glad you cleared that up.

Macados is close, that's a great place for food and a drink.  Or at least it was 20 years ago....boy how time flies.  Maybe someone more local could tell us if we could get a couple tables on a thursday night or if something else would work better.  I'll be in around 8:00 or so myself, driving down from Warrenton and staying at the Inn at VT.

I think my room has two double beds and someone wanted to talk about sharing a room.....let me know.

yeah i was going to say post the address of SB cuz there are 2 krogers and 3 SB in town...

anyway, i had originally posted to ask about sharing the hotel the night before, i have since decided to stop at a campground the night before about an hour out of town on my way down, so i am out for sharing a hotel that night now.

because of that camp, i won't be able to meet the night before, but figure we will round up at the SB/Krogers that AM and  :thumbsup:party pace thumbsup to the memorial?
dont' leave without me nono

I'll be at SBux around 6:30 AM. I'm working til 5:00 PM on Thursday and the drive from central OH is 5-6 hours so a Thursday night meet is out for me.

Sounds like I should bring three AAA batteries with me?

They recommend the 8x Lithium or higher - in fact they are very adamant that you don't use alkalines or lesser lithiums.

Lots of calls, Folks. I had some technical difficulties getting these out. I apologize for them being late!  We have calls from Chris Thomkins, Sean Brinker, Jeff Mullen and Ed Duvall! Sean Brinker's last call was to say he's OUT! He's out first DNF.

As I sit here nursing some seriously stiff knees, I was reflecting on the ride and wanted to give some shout outs.  I know they call this "self-supported" but I think that is something of a misnomer (at least for me).  There were several individuals who helped me along the way to make my completion of the ride possible and/or less miserable.  So here it goes (in order of appearance):

Thanks to:
-The lady in the Ford pickup who helped me with directions and then gave me a pack of starburst candy and the best pear I ever ate in my life
-The guy digging up taters in his garden who refilled me with water, told me where to get a burger, and offered to make me a ham sandwich.  (I hope your shoulder heals up quick and you can get back out on your stumpjumper soon)
-The old rancher who let me use his compressor to pump my tires back up after I found out my tire pump was broken.  You saved me some serious rolling resistance.  Good luck on restoring those old wagons in your barn.
-Phil and the gang at the lake moomaw campground.  The spaghetti was crazy delicious, the hospitality was amazing, and the space heater was a godsend (y'all probably saved me from near hypothermia).  Good luck with getting the dock completed and I hope your shoulder heals up enough to get back to some serious mtb'ing out there in CO.

This was a great first year event, the course was consistently difficult throughout its entire length, and provided more than it's share of fall beauty.

I'll take a few moments and write a complete summary soon!

Here are some pictures from the route: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rudetay/sets/72157631732780721/

Excellent pictures Taylor. Also a good reminder of how much weight I still need to lose. Great job out there by the way! 38 hours is ridiculous!

Just now seeing this forum.  Yeah - thanks for the pictures Taylor.  Very nice!  And great job Taylor and Chris for flying around that very difficult course.

Hopefully the AML becomes an annual event.  Has anyone heard from Chris Thompkins lately?  Chris did such an amazing job putting this together but I haven't heard anything from him after the race.
