and Matt Ruscigno spot has been in the same location for some time--mulling options or resting in the shade before moving on?

His pack is the Terra Nova Laser. He doesn't have a shelter or sleeping bag, just a thermo-lite bivy sack and an extra layer of clothes. His plan is largely to travel at night while it's cooler and only take short naps. Much of his pack is his food, he didn't make any drops although he plans to buy more food at shops along the way. I don't know much beyond that, he'll have to give you a full run down when he's done.
Interesting. Glad to see his SPOT finally spit out a point for us. Hope the big toe turns out to be a non-issue. Thanks for the posts, calc! |

I'm sure All in all pretty amazing to me, not just that she can climb so well--that's her forte—but pushing her loaded bike over the hike-a-bike stuff--that had to be a bit ‘extra’ difficult over the long run |

Way to go Lynda! Amazing ride.
To add to the GPS discussion, I have always used either a etrex Vista or GPSmap 60, for both biking and my work (I am a forester). They have never frozen on me or had software problems. I once bought an edge 350, but ditched it after a few times.
So far as I know you cannot load tracks on the micro SD card and get it into the unit. The micro SD card holds the base maps. I loaded the best ones offered by gpsfiledeopot.com for AZ. It is free. It also has some of the AZ trails on the base map as well as all the roads and other established trails. This is part of the reason I was able to continue after I accidently deleted my tracks on the first morning.
Another interesting experience I had on the trail was inadvertently riding through a swarm of bees. They were smacking into me all over. Fortunately I was not stung. Nor did they chase me after I hit the adrenalin fueled turbo-charge button.

Congrats to Brad Kee, 2nd place and taking a nice healthy 10+ hours off his AZT300 time last year. Great ride, Brad. Brad may have ridden more AZT singletrack miles than anyone else with his bonus 4-5 miles of dead end Antelope Peak singletrack...
I am happy to see Jamil's SPOT report positions beyond Patagonia. He's running up the highway to Sonoita now. I'm keen to see how far he can make it tonight.
Matt R. is now reporting vehicle speeds, heading up towards Mammoth. I'll take that as a sign he is out. That leaves us with a lone full AZT racer - Max Morris. He appears to right now be watering up at the artesian well, and likely riding in 3rd/4th with Matt Fusco.

Looks like Max is at the campsite just past the Well my guess is he will be getting some rest and then up and at it early like 3 am. That's pretty much his standard work schedule. I have no doubt he could be going faster but he knows he is in it for the long haul.

A bit more communication with Jamil. He hit Patagonia and was feeling pretty down, but made some modifications to his shoe which seems to be helping his toe problem. He got some food there and started feeling better, and has been able to push on to Sonoita.

Too bad.
Erick Lord has moved into 3rd place now, passing Max while he rests for the night. Brad Mattingly is in Oracle at last point, and it seems a little uncertain whether he was able to figure out and stay on the AZT through Oracle Ridge.
Jamil is running out of Sonoita. Hopefully the pavement was the break (?) his toe needed.

I assume Jamil's splits are accurate, right? It will be interesting to see how long his splits beat the cyclists. Looks like he already is digitally in front of a few of them.
It speaks volumes of the brutality of the Canelos with said high temperatures.

I've been following your activities for some time and they are really inspiring. First of all: Congrats to Lynda from Austria in Central Europe -it must have been a hell of a ride - really awesome. Nick - thanks for the further info, by the looks of the speed Jamil is making, maybe we could learn things from him (especially me!).
Yuri - nice write up and nicer pics!
Max is about 2 miles behind Eric, who stopped a little later, further down the trail, and so overtook him. Eric seems to have set off nice and early at 1.30am, maybe having spoken and ridden with Max, he knows his schedule and is making the jump to try to a) avoid the heat climbing through Box Canyon and up Orphan Boy, and b) to try to build enough of a lead over Max that he can stay out front to Picketpost!
Meanwhile Jamil is making great progress. I'm kind of amused by his report of feeling pretty down at Patagonia, I think half the field is in that state by there, it's a tough start to the race! The velvet elvis pizza place (or snacks and water from next door) and a little time in the shade usually do the trick nicely, perking you up for the next section.
Good luck to all those still out on the trail! The attrition rate this year has been crazy!
