However, I intend to do the race in reverse (Durango to Denver). Is this permissible by CTR race standards? Anyone else?
Sorry for the late reply.  By all means, do it in reverse!  I'd probably just make a note of that in the results.  Maybe we'll all do it in reverse for 2011...

Haven't seen anyone mention this yet.

http://lwcoaching.com/?page_id=811

A bikepacking specific training plan.... more so, a CTR specific training plan.  Official start of the 12 week program is in 3 days ... so it's time to get serious, eh?

It was created by Dave and Lynda, the 2-epic think-tank, meaning a wealth of bikepacking and 24 hour race experience has gone into it, not to mention Lynda's excellent coaching cred.  Check it out.

That looks very tempting, shame that it doesn't work well with my schedule.

Riding in reverse seems like a interesting way to go...hit the more remote stuff first.....I'm up for that... BTW, this will bill my first attempt.  I think it will be quite an adventure!  Have done 12 and 24 hour stuff before, but not on this scale... icon_biggrin

Brave Man mtbriderz. I know how packed up the start is in Denver, at least I won't be alone at the start!

I was browsing the Colorado Trail Foundation page and noticed they have a few new re-routes not in the books.

http://www.coloradotrail.org/reroute.html

How will these play into the race this year?

Thanks for the post.  I'll go through these in the order they are listed on the CTF's website.

  • The Segment 10 reroute is in the Mt. Massive Wilderness and does not affect the CTR.
  • The reroute at the start of Segment 11 was in place last year and is a welcome change making the initial climb from Halfmoon creek enjoyable.  The old trail is closed.
  • The reroute in the middle of Segment 11 follows singletrack instead of jeep roads down to Twin Lakes.  It is well marked with CT markers and was in place last year, although no one knew about it ahead of time.  Some racers followed this new trail, while others took the jeep route.  Either was deemed acceptable last year.  This year, the course follows the rerouted singletrack exclusively.
  • The old trail across Twin Lakes Dam has been re-opened for 2010.  This eliminates the confusing piece of trail cobbled together around the East side of the Lakes.
  • The Cataract/Coney reroute (seg 23 & 24) is already in the books and is what the CTR course follows.  This was the highlight for many during last year's race.
  • The Clear Creek reroute is at the start of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness area and does not affect the CTR.

Could you please someone prepare gpx track for CTR 2010 based on the last year route by including those changes?

Patience, my friend!  Final GPX track will be available 2 weeks prior to the race.

Last year's track is all ya need for planning purposes.  The changes Stefan will cook into this year's edition probably won't create any strategy differences.

In topofusion you can reverse a track with two mouse clicks.  Not to say starting in Durango will be easy...just reversing the track is easy Wink

Fully loaded and packing heat!  This is sooooooo much fun!  Been getting out on a fully loaded bike and pack.  Yes, the SRAM XX works well.  The 39-26T crankset matches up well with 11-36 cassette when fully loaded on varied terrain.

More details on my blog: http://www.jeffkerkove.net/2010/06/fully-loaded.html

Looks like the CTR start date and/or location will have to change this year!

More info forthcoming...

**NEWSFLASH**

June 17, 2010

Please see below for a news release about important work at Strontia Reservoir, which will close Waterton Canyon for a number of months in 2010 and 2011. Please pass this along to people you know who would be interested in this information.

Vital Reservoir Work to Close Waterton Canyon

Denver Water to remove massive amounts of Hayman Fire sediment

June 17, 2010:

Denver Water’s Strontia Springs Reservoir contains more than one million cubic yards of sediment — a result of forest fires and subsequent intense rains over the years. Increased sediment creates reservoir operational challenges and causes water quality issues that impact the functions of the Foothills and Marston water treatment plants. As a result, a Denver Water contractor will dredge the reservoir to remove at least 625,000 cubic yards of sediment — enough to fill the football field at Invesco to a height of more than 200 feet.

This large-scale project will require heavy machinery and equipment. To ensure the safety of those who recreate in the area, Waterton Canyon will be closed to the public for a number of months in 2010 and 2011 while the majority of the work takes place.

Waterton Canyon will be closed as follows:

-       Monday, Aug. 2, 2010 until Sunday, Dec. 3, 2010

-       Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 until Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011

Neither the parking lot at the canyon's entrance nor the canyon will be accessible during the closure. Some contractor activity will precede this date but there will be flaggers to caution the public during July.

Access to The Colorado Trail (CT) from Waterton Canyon also will be closed during these times. The next closest access to CT Segment 1 is via the Indian Creek Trailhead on CO Hwy 67, 10.5 miles west of Sedalia (see www.ColoradoTrail.org).

“We understand that Waterton Canyon is a very popular recreation site for people of all ages, and we know some will be inconvenienced by this closure,” said Neil Sperandeo, manager of recreation for Denver Water. “When the full scope of the project was completed, it was determined it would be unsafe to leave the canyon open during construction. We hope to make the canyon even better for recreation when it reopens in 2012.”

For questions related to recreation, e-mail recreation@denverwater.org. For more information about Waterton Canyon, visit www.denverwater.org.

Starting on Sunday isn't a bad idea, but it'll be a busy trail over the weekend for sure. But better Sunday than Saturday, I expect!

I guess that tosses in my towel for going in reverse. No big deal, will go the standard route assuming we start earlier (Saturday or Sunday).

bummer. if the race will be starting earlier, that's cool, but it would be good to know pretty soon for planning purposes.
