I dunno about the GPS track for this year. Last year it was darn near 100% accurate as I combined several tracks and double checked everything in TopoFusion. There are only 1 or 2 places where it was unclear and I think those parts aren't even in the race this year as they're on the Tarryall detour.

I didn't find Sargents Mesa to be as bad as others have but perhaps that's because on the SS I knew I couldn't ride it. I also had an awesome sunset and a hot dinner in my belly (had a stove) halfway thru which helps. I did resort to 100 steps at a time climbing the final pitches but the descent to Lujan is awesome. Hopefully all those boys up there found some water, I found a good clear seep last year before Sargents and easily made it to the creek but if you skipped it or it is dry this year that could be rough.

Shelman really gained on me last year from Angel of Shavano Trailhead thru the Crest. He knows that section well and is really fast there!

Owen will miss the sunset up on Sargents Mesa I think but the rest of the chasers should see similar view to the pictures below. I hope the storms are non-existent and they find their way. There will be a lot of hiking in this section, after the meadow riding is over, rocks galore take it's place. They'll slog and slog until finally a glorious descent appears. They'll find a HUGE parking lot in the dark and hopefully they know the way to the gate. I had to search for a few minutes to find it last year. Then the trail will lead right across the small but clear and flowing creek, delicious water to be sure and they'll likely need it. From there bivy spots will appear here and there in the dark, will they answer their siren call? Or will they push on in search of Owen somewhere ahead?

I ran into Jason and Doug this AM and was able to get some photos...

Following Doug up the last S Fooses pitch

Jason and doug just past Silver Creek headed into the middle of nowhere.

They both seemed in good spirits and going strong. I couldn't tell if Doug stopped at the spring near Greens Creek so hopfully he's ok with water it was pretty warm on the Crest today...

Cheers,
P.T.

I just saw Owen's split on the leaderboard, 300 miles in 2 days 9 hours???  It took me that long to reach breck when I was touring.  Might we see a sub 4 day record?

I really don't think we'll see sub 4. While they'll go quickly on the detour after Cochetopa Pass road, the segment 22 and 23 sections are REALLY tough and it's a solid ~20 hours of riding to get to the end from Silverton. If they finish anywhere near 4.5 days it will be incredible. I was predicting the leaders would be just under 5 days at the start, I guess we'll find out soon enough!

Even the uphill pics of this ride make it look great, but again, I'm glad I'm in VA on the computer watching.  Thanks to everyone for all the pics and notes for those of us who just like to watch and root for friends.

Marshal Bird calls in from Leadville. Andrew Carney busted a chainring and has routed to Salida for repairs. And David Goldberg's Mom wishes him well!

Looks like Owen is climbing hard for the summit of the detour. Soon he'll head for new terrain and we'll see just how far he goes tonight. The good thing is that he'll likely beat and afternoon t-storms tomorrow...I think. There's a chance for racers to go off route to Lake City for supplies but it's a huge elevation loss and I doubt anyone will want to give up their hard earned climbing.

Shelman has pulled ahead of Doug a bit though they both look to be at or past Lujan Creek. I think they'll both want to chase Owen tonight, particularly Jason as he chased Ethan hard last year and caught him before Silverton. Jefe has also pulled ahead of Stefan, hopefully Stefan hasn't had any more spokes go south. Ethan is somewhere behind Doug/Jason it appears though his SPOT point is a bit older. Really incredible riding. Lots of really hard terrain coming up on top of a brutal part they just went through. Go CTR racers go! Sending good vibes and no bad weather or mechancial thoughts your way Smiley

I'm feeling for Carney having to go off route to Salida for a new chainring. That's a huge detour. Keep going Carney!! Don't give in to the town temptation and bail!

Great stuff as always. It's riveting to follow this.

Go Stefan. (His brother-in-law here.)

Thanks for the updates and to whomever said "if you feel like dropping wait until tomorrow". Otherwise I have run and rescued my racer.  good advice for those families member who are watching and reading.  Greg B was having a low point in BV but with sandwiches, coffee at Bongo Billy's he was up and moving and feeling great again.  (all within a matter of hours).  icon_biggrin

'zactly. If you feel bad, eat. If you still feel bad, sleep. If you still feel bad in the morning, pedal a few miles. Only then even think about dropping.

All you families, keep those racers psyched! I know it's hard to hear a broken voice on the phone but you can keep them going as long as they're physically okay. Bait them to the next town and by then they'll be rocking again Smiley

Heh. That may be his goal but it's 10:20 and segment 22 and 23 will not go easily.
