Be hard to see cairns point to point (or ridge to ridge) at night - so doubt they push too far.
yep. it highlights how strategic getting thru the new section before darkness of day 3.75 can/will be if you want to challenge the overall.

It appears that Jason is on forest service road headed toward silverton
yeah, he just linked up 520 with the back side of stony pass. i'm guessing he knows what he's doing. bummer.

Meanwhile Doug Johnson is sitting still right in the middle of course were Jason backtracked...

I just noticed Owen's detail map. It looks like he got off course (and later corrected himself) right around the place where Stefan is now (Jarosa Mesa on the "terrain" map). He seems pretty good at memorizing everyone's tire tracks, so hopefully he'll keep going the right way.

Wow. Owen is trucking towards Blackhawk Pass, another pusher especially in the dark or if the horses chewed it up like last year. I "think" it took me ~11 hours to finish the race from Blackhawk last year but that's a WAG from memory. Of course it's getting late and while the top 3 last year all tried to make it to the finish without sleeping, none of us were able too. We all had to catch at least a couple hours of ZZZ's along the way.

I'm really hoping Jason is alright on his detour and he's headed that way for a reason, not because he's lost. If there is a problem with the trail at that point we'll know soon. Jefe is less than an hour behind Doug who appears to be stopped. He may be sleeping (I slept early on my last night) or who knows what. Jefe knows the new section of the trail as well as anyone in the race and I doubt Doug would let him pass unchallenged so I suspect we'll see them both moving beyond that point sometime soon.

More thoughts and pictures tomorrow. Segment 22 & 23 are brutally tough, esp if they had any weather up there. There is *nowhere* to hide. And even if everything goes perfectly it's a lot of walking near 13,000 feet with very tired legs and mind that just want a hot meal and the "safety" of a quick stop in Silverton.

Jefe has caught Doug and stopped. Doug has been stopped almost 2 hours. Wonder what is going on, the suspense is killing me! Jason is also stopped but his spot is still on. Will they all wait for dawn now?

Owen is still going up Blackhawk Pass. There is water on the downhill back in the trees assuming one of several smaller creeks are running. Does he need it? I think I did last year. Can he go all night? I think sub 4 is extremely unlikely but depending on how much sleep he needs, he could best his time from last year which is pretty incredible. The axe of the Tarryall detour saves significant time up front but 10 mile and seg 22&23 are tough and make the course slower for sure.

To add to that, Stefan appears to have taken a ~2 hour nap a few hours ago. He's moving towards Jefe/Doug (still both stopped). I'd guess he's at least 2-3 hours behind them but if they're sawing logs then he could catch them in not too long.

Owen is absolutely and totally crushing this course! Hopefully he has a new official record for this route in just a little while.

It'll be interesting to hear Jason's story. He's back on track it seems but that detour was..... unexpected.

I gotta say, the weather sure cleared up for these guys when compared to how it's been over the last few months. They got a great window of opportunity.

this is jason's detour track...

i wonder what he's going to say, looking back on this all-night detour. i wonder what he HAS been saying and thinking.... seeing his track like this, and how he's looping back up to the trail ... and the time it's taken to do that... is amazing to me.

that has got to be supremely frustrating. i really hope he was and IS OK.

Maybe we'll get an update if he gets to Silverton and the others now in front of him are there and fill them in, then perhaps Stefan will check in and let someone know. In any event -- Yikes.

Stefan, Doug and Jefe reach Silverton.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Jason is backtracking again?!!

champ... yup... that is what it looks like to me, esp when you focus in real close, and look at all his time stamps... but he's been stock-still for a little while now. maybe he's just finally taking a break and putting it all together in his head?

edit:  he's moving... in the backwards direction.

ugh. 5 bucks says he wants to pick up where he left off so as to 'completel the whole course'... even tho he put in a whole nights worth of extra trail.

Owen is going to come in under his time from last year and Stefan does catch Jefe and Doug in the night! They're all rolling into Silverton more or less together. Crazy stuff.

Hope Jason is okay and Ethan had a long stop too. Weather on the radar looked "okay" last night. There was at least one big rain cloud but I couldn't tell if it passed over the course for sure.

Stefan called from Silverton, where's he's eating a burrito with Jefe and Doug. He's in the process of buying a new chain, not sure why. He saw a big storm coming yesterday evening and bunkered down for a solid 2 hour nap under the trees. I mentioned Jason's situation to him and Stefan doesn't think that he carried a GPS or a map on him; can anyone confirm this??

Stefan remembers it taking about 20 hours to go from Silverton to Durango. His legs are worked, so we'll see how it goes today!

Yea Jason didn't have either of those things as last year as far as I know. Man I can't believe his detour, that's a bummer.

It's a good 20 hours from Silverton to Durango. Looking at Owen's SPOT data, he slept 3 hours or so last night, not totally unexpected. He's not to Junction Creek yet though the SPOT data is an hour old. He's got a final ~1000 foot climb between him and a descent to the finish.

How are Stefan's hands doing? Looks like Doug got some good rest last night while Stefan and Jefe may be more sleep deprived. Doug hasn't ridden the final section though (at least in the race), will that help him or hurt him trying to beat those two into Durango. With his good rest maybe he can do it without more sleep?
