Back on course at 5:00 looks like he is human after all. Looks like he spent the night in Williams and got a good nights sleep I should think he will be able to make good time now that he has had some rest. Seams like trying to go on last night would have been tricky even if he had done Sycamore before there are several places that would be hard to deal with in the dark. And if he hadn't done it before then it would be a major pain. Especially that first big wash crossing there just is not a trail and it was only because I could see the trail on the other side that I knew where to go.

6:30 looks like he is at the start of Sycamore that's some cold riding to get there all most all down hill on easy roads no way to build up any body heat that doesn't just make you colder as you go faster hope he had some good cold weather gear.

Looks like Dave will get it done in ~2 days and 5ish hours... Whatever his time it looks to be a killer thru-ride benchmark set for Chad and Scott's CocoLoop. The window to do better is looking to close until next spring - forecast snow levels possible down to 6100feet this week here in Flag'. That calls for a  and hopefully a migration to the www.splitboard.com forums for me! |

Dave still has patches but is almost out of glue. He was not liking the tubes + AZ prickly things combo. Today's progress might depend on glue supply and prickly things abundance.

Looks like 2 days 3 hours 55 minutes so I guess the glue supply held out.
Looks like the predictions of 15 hours faster the the AZT 300 were close.
I'm guessing the same a Chris that he wasn't running sealant, I didn't have a single flat out there. Running Stan's in side of tubes.
I am wondering how many flats there were in the group that did the stage race.

Congrats, Dave. Nice ride despite the setbacks!
There isn't too much cactus on the route. The Chad/Scott/Lee trio didn't have any flats on either the initial exploration or the stage race. I don't think anyone got one during the stage race, but I'm not sure. Maybe Dave's problem was getting thorns out of the tire once tubeless died? That can be a bugger sometimes (hidden thorns). Sometimes tubeless works too well....
Was super fun to follow, with the route so fresh in our minds.
Coconino season sounds like it's over. Meanwhile the trio figured out the crux section on another ~250 mile bikepacking stage race loop, the season for which is just opening up. Details TBA.

That was a fantastically fun, rocky, technical, breathtaking route! Scott and Chad have established a toughy. Mile for mile, it is far harder than the Grand Loop. Apparently the hike a bike of GLR wasn't what they didn't like  Highlights: - Sycamore canyon sunrise - Mingus climb at night rocks!!! Verde valley on one side, Prescott valley on the other, with a meteor shower overhead. Prolly the trip highlight. - Wing Mtn moto trail was a friggin blast. At one point I just started laughing uncontrollably. Must have been the red bull? - Sedona sunset - Bike & Bean in Sedona hooking up the shifter fix - Yeager trail descent at 3:30 AM. Challenges: - rear shifter EXPLODED at mile 5.5. So I just rigged it up to the 20 tooth and called it good. - 1st bike shop in Sedona was closed - Lime Kiln. Gawd. Big rusty nail through tread and out sidewall. Goodbye Stans setup, hello flats every 2 hours for the duration... I made some aggressive equipment choices (by my pack mule standards). A new sleep system left little room for error but that hotel in Williams perfect. So, there's a benchmark. It's a soft one. Moving time was ~26 hours according the Garmin. The rest was fixing flats - there's lot's of room for improvement should anyone feel hungry for the challenge. Big thanks to Scott and Chad for all their work on establishing this route. It's full-on legit! |

Man I so wanted to get out there. This one is on my schedule for next year. The well spaced towns lend themselves to aggressive experimentation.
Oh DH, the nail in the tread/sidewall. I feel ya. I've done that twice and it is the worst.

Nice list, Dave. Glad you enjoyed the route and that it challenged you. Grand Loop has never been much of a challenge for you, so I'm glad this one was a bit of one.  Saying it's harder than 'the loop' in any way still seems comical to me, but maybe I'm just too singletrack oriented. I'll hike my bike for eons if there's good singletrack to be had. On 'the loop' you hike your bike just to get to more hike-a-bike, and it's all on roads. Still the vertical per mile isn't even comparable, but Coco is definitely technical and the abuse racks up on the body. Again, nice work out there. |

Harder or easier....it's all relative. The part of thru-racing that gets hard is mostly internal. I am certain that if you thru ride the Coco route you'll see it with new eyes, and those eyes may become a bit more blurred by pain All the nitty gritty is now on the blog: http://2-epic.com/?p=956. |
