As a light weight backpacker and bikepacker I find the gear I use for backpacking works great when I bike pack as well.
Items or subjects that could be discussed would be alky stoves, beer can cookkits, cuben tarps, hammocks/tents/bivi's,
Clothing that works for hiking but could also be used for bikepacking like pants with zip on legs.
Then there's packable fishing gear, rugged cameras that can take it.
The list is huge.

What do you mods or site owner/s think? Is this in your business model for the site? or am I way off base?

OK, 51 peeks no comments....
I know I put this question to the mods and/or site owner/s and I should have
also asked what the active members thought.
How else would the mods know if the idea was good or bad and worth considering.

So, active members, if you think this is a good idea or not. Please post you thoughts.

As an experiment I thought I'd post 3 new threads in the bikepacking folder.
They would be specific to gear you would carry/use while bikepacking...
Picts are always cool and a sentence or two on what you use and why you selected that particular model or method.

Weather Protection- tents, tarps, bivouac, sleeping bags, pads
Kitchen-stoves, cookware, water treatment, favorite food while bikepacking
Clothing- riding protection from snow, wind, sun, sweat

Again if these topics are out of the forums mission statement please feel free to delete all I've posted.
Just trying to help out, make a few friends, get a few bikepacking discussions going.

Thanks for the post and idea -- I think it's right in line with the mission of the site.  To me bikepacking is *all about* lightweight since it makes riding and traversing difficult terrain *possible*.  So it's sort of built into it, in my view.  But I would sure consider adding a separate forum for ultra-light discussions, if there is interest.

Anyone else agree with Colorado Cool Breeze?

Hi Scott,
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
A single ultra light gear folder was not what I was suggesting.
Please forgive my poor communication skills.

When I first started exploring bikepacking.net I had a list of things I was interested in learning about.
My list:
What kinds of bikes are peeps using to bike pack with?
How are they carrying their camping gear?
What is used for shelter from rain, wind, possibly snow?
How did they stay warm while riding and in camp?
Did they cook? what kinds of stoves and cookkits are being used.
What are they eating while riding and in camp?
Where are people bikepacking?
Trip Reports

I found some of my answers by looking thru two folders. Bikepacking and Q&A
However it was not easy. The Bikepacking folder is a catch all of trip reports and general discussions
on just about everything related to bikepacking.
If one wanted to read about what kind of stoves are people using while bikepacking you might find a stove
post on page 24 and page 17 so my point is you will spend hours looking. If we had a folder or sticky on
Bikepack Cooking post would discuss stoves (alky, canister, white gas) Cookkits (Titanium, Beer can)
water treatment (steripen, tablets, gravity filters, pumps) and finely favorite meals on the trail.

Folders or stickies within the Bikepacking sub-forum on these subjects would benefit a new person just getting into bikepacking
because it gives him a list of the areas he/she needs to do research it.
It would help the veteran who might be looking for something new to try.

What I've done in the past on other forums is create an FAQ, this is a lot of work initially to set up, but essentialy covers the same sort of thing in a much smaller forum footprint. Within the FAQ sticky, I can then create headline topics with quicklinks to historical topics. They've worked very well in the past, however it relies on good maintenance and autoprune turned off.

Good ideas, guys.  I think a stickied FAQ would be a great resource.  It is work to maintain it, but just getting the basics to answer the common questions would be very useful.

Some people automatically ignore anything stickied and ask anyway, but that's OK.
