Anyone do any bikepacking here in So. Cal? I'm researching 2-3 day rides. The more technical the better.
So far I am considering doing an end to end ride of the Santa Ana Mtns from The Corona/Anaheim hills area all the way to Santa Rosa Plateau.

Hi Rob
I live in So OC and do some bikepacking. The main divide truck trail is not very technical but has a lot of up and downs. The first being going up Coal Cyn. I'd be interested in knowing more about your route. Jacques

Hey Jacques, I'm in South OC as well. I'm a mechanic at Rock N Road Cyclery in Mission Viejo, and live in Laguna Hills.
Yeah, the end to end ride would be mostly fireroad, actually starting in Riverside and ending up in Menifee, using a cyclocross bike. I am also trying to figure out good 2 day mostly singletrack routes, using Blue Jay campground as the midpoint and Mission Viejo as the starting/endpoint...
I'm thinking of going through Tijeras Creek, Oniel, Trabuco Canyon rd, Up Trabuco Trail, right on main divide, camp at Blue Jay, down San juan Trail, San Juan Creek Trail through Caspers and then home from there. That's just a rough outlay for right now, there's a few other ways to mix it up.
What routes have you done so far? I'm thinking about doing it in the next few weeks, just waiting for the right time with the work schedule...

Hi Rob
I've been in the Rock N Road Cyclery and live in Laguna Hills too.
Your proposed overnight rides to Blue Jay sound good. I have ridden the trails you mention and can see the potential for some good overnight rides going to Blue Jay. Do you plan to ride them on your cyclocross bike or do you have a bike you prefer to ride technical trails on? I am always interested in seeing other riders bikepacking setup and what works for them.
My own experience is on dirt roads or moderate trails such as the Virgin River rim trail or The Rainbow rim trail on the North rim of the Grand Canyon. Being out for 3 to 7 days.

Cool, we'll have to ride soon! I still need to get a few more things before I can start bikepacking.
I just bought a new bike, a 2008 Specialized Enduro SL, it should be in soon, then I am switching out all the parts.
I bought a frame bag off MikeC, still need the bar bag and saddle bag, and a Sleeping bag.

Rob Bikepacking takes a lot of gear especially if you plan to go ultralight. I have a older sleeping bag that was considered light in its day. Now you can get one that packs down to half its size. Light bags can be pricey too. I'd like to go for a ride. It's going to have to wait till early December tho. Thanksgiving week I am going to Copper Canyon Mexico as a tourist, but am scouting the area out for a future mtn bike ride. I'm doing a weekend bike-packing trip on March 14-15 in the Anza-Borrego desert.....its a 60 mile round-trip.....starting in Anza and riding through Coyote Canyon to Borrego Springs. Its an out and back trip....p.m. if you are interested.

That Coyote Canyon route will be really nice when you're going Mid-March. I did a couple overnighters that time of year last year and there were flowers blooming at various elevations.
