I will be taking the Tour Divide from Denver up to Banff in a couple days and was thinking about adding to the trip if I have the time.  I would like to stay on dirt as much as possible.  Some routes that I have seen others take:

HWY 93 north to HWY 16, west on HWY 16 to HWY 5, HWY 5 south

A shorter trip would be to take Route 1 to HWY 5 (to make it a little more interesting 5a can be used which bypasses Kamloops).

Could also head back south and get on HWY 3 to take that west.

Thanks for any ideas.

Just get on the trans Canada trail.  It is very much like the great divide.  Much better where they overlap on the old route near Fernie,  The quads have churned up some of the Kettle Valley, but all in all it is a decent route.
