Curious of what everyone's opinion is on bars, I am doing a ultra bike packing in July. I am riding a 29er hard tail and currently only have a flat bar, I have done 100km rides on flat bars before but this race is 700km.

I don't have a ton of money to spend, so in someone's opinion bar end bull horns or aero bars?

I find aerobars pretty annoying if there's a lot of singletrack. I seem to stab myself when I need to quickly climb up a steep bit of trail (say)

If the race profile looks like more of a gravel grinder, Arrow-Dynamik bars are nice.

Healthy compromise: Jones H Bars. The wider ones are better for single track, but take getting used to. If there's very steep descents or lots of tight switchbacks, you may hate yourself, and wish for flat bars. I prefer a lot less sweep for techy stuff, there's certainly options, there.

IF I was to do the TD again, I would seriously consider Jones H Bars, and maybe aerobars. For that, I would use the stubbier ones. If $$ is tight, Surly is hopefully shipping their version of the H Bar. There's less sweep, I think but it's  total boat anchor - almost a half POUND heavier than the H Bar, which isn't super light.

Thanks for the advice, the ride is mostly a gravel grind, with some good climbs.

I am going to look into an H-bar or something like the H-bar anyways. I like the idea of having a forward bar position.

Those surly bars look ridiculous! Reminds me of old school 4 piece BMX bars.

Jones Loop, add some hinged TOGs, and wrap the bars, makes for comfy alternative position...

I love my H bars for endurance rides. Once I get the angle set, the pressure on my palms is even and I rarely have any hand issues.
I have 2 Jones H Bars and just ordered a carbon one for my TD bike.

And as Mike has shown above. Tremendous cockpit room.

My take on it is Hbars + aero bars. I love the sweptback position and the amount of real estate the Jones offers, but don't really care for the more aero position for long distance rides. For the long distance stuff I mount an aero bar setup in a very relaxed, comfortable upright'ish position. Works fantastic on gravel; I rarely leave the aero bars but it definitely makes for a heavy front end and less than ideal for more techie single track.
