Hi. Im slowly building up a Surly ECR from a bare frame for a long trip taking in The Great Divide , Baja California and on to South America. Can you Recommend a 29 rim that will be both suitable for plus tyres and , should the need arise, 2 inch tyres in South America. Disc hub front, Rohloff hub rear.  Which would be better to go for, 32 or 36h rims. Ally not carbon and genuine tubeless prefered. Thanks

With a Rohloff hub, 32 spokes are sufficent; also for loaded bikes.

Thanks for the input. I need a symetrical rim with the rohloff, one of its advantages being it doesnt produce a dished wheel. There dont seem to be many 36h options available, even fewer here in the UK. Ive looked at the Velocity Blunt 35 and Dually but neither are a true tubeless rim. The race face ARC 35 or 40 look good but there seem to be some question over durability and durability is the prime quality im looking for rather than light weight.THE SUNRINGLE duroc 40 only seems available on a complete wheel. Any others i havent found yet.

The Ryde Trace 35 and Trace 42 shall be available in the UK. BTW, I’m riding a Surly ECR too, with Rabbit Hole’s around a Rohloff hub. I’ve tried 2.4” tires, that works as well

Thanks Sigma. I hadnt seen those before. On the website  https://www.ryde.nl/trace-m-35  it describes the rim as being meant for use with b plus tyres. What does this mean. Also in the description it says it comes with ofset but in the specification table it has the offset as zero. Any idea what this means. Otherwise it seems to fit the bill regarding suitability of tyre sizes.

The B+ indicates they are for 650B (also 27.5) + sized tires which are usually 2.5 in or greater width...not 29ers.

I didn't look around long enough to see if they offer 29er rims, but they sure don't make it obvious in their categories or search criteria.

The rims with "os" in the name look to be their offset rim offerings...click on one of them and see the picture.

Yes, Duallys are not 100% tubeless specific - - but with a few layers of tape they are.  Inexpensive and not made of carbon. Have had Ardents and Hookworms on these rims with a Rohloff rear and DT Swiss front with absolutely no problems.

I would stay 32 hole, and go with a 35mm inside width rim. That will be fine for a big Plus tire and could still take a smaller tire in a pinch. There are plenty of tubeless ready options in that size, some that you already mentioned. I have no idea about availability of any of these in Europe though, so sorry! I agree to stay away from the Velocity offerings if tubeless is important. Some people make it work, but it's extra hassle and not as reliable as a true tubeless ready rim.

Race Face/Easton Arc 35
Kore Realm P35
Spank Oozy Trail 395
Stan's ZTR Major (38mm)
Sun Ringle Duroc 40
