I may be in complete violation of Rule 23, but pedaling down hill is for suckers. I'm always happy to loose the high end in exchange for more low end.

what gearing do you run in the back then? I am also in this same mind set. Downhill is "rest time" for my legs and butt sometimes

My Fargo has a 10-42 in the back, and a 38 in the front. I frequently wish I had a few more gears. I've never spun out. I have walked. In the winter I spend 90% of my time in the bottom 3 gears, and 50% in the bottom 1.

If you don't pedal downhill and spend 90% of your time in the bottom 3 gears, why not put on a smaller chainring? Seems like the obvious answer?

When you do have to push your bike, what's the best gear to have your bike in?

When time and money allow, that is exactly what I'll do.

Just a thought, but if UR using a old dbl or triple crank why not leave a little ring on without the derailur. When you get to Noodle Mtn, manually move the chain to the granny ring.
