I found a google earth KML file for a route to Batopilas.  My buddy says that it is a "must do".

Hi,

Here you have a tracklog  for an approximatelly  10 Km long  route in the Copper Canyon area seen through our soon to be released Mapserver.

http://www.bicimapas.com.mx/BiciMapasRutaBarrancasCobre.html

You may download the GPX file by right clicking the link and selecting "Save Target As".  The map image will allow you to see the detail level we have for Mexico.

Greetings

Crisx, if you`re registered on mtbr, check the sticky in the Mexico subforum.  It has several Copper Canyon trip reports listed, all mtb specific and all in English.

BiciMapas, do you handle paper maps?  From your website, I got the impresion that it was strictly electronic versions, so please correct me if have it wrong.

The maps are in DRG format so that you can load them in programs that support import of raster images such as Oziexplorer and the like which would also allow for printing. This is a great feature as you can plan your desired route and show it on top of the map and then print it to take it with you. Loading the same planned route data to your GPS would then be the perfect complement for navigation purposes.
If needed, we can provide printed maps as well, but it seems most people prefer the flexibility of the DRG. They are  in 1:50 scale for the whole country, in UTM projection with both Lat/Lon and UTM grids for GPS usage.

Greetings

Stumbled across this thread while reliving old memories.
I biked down in Copper Canyon in 1996 with Ray Molina and Alturo had a ball awesome singletrack which just goes on for hours and hours. Some really friendly locals and some not so friendly military as I recall. Good luck with your trip it's worth basing yourself down in the likes of Batopilas for a couple of weeks

I live in Los Mochis, right at the entrance to Copper Canyon, I have some info at http://www.frc.com.mx/wordpress/?page_id=138 and here http://www.frc.com.mx/wordpress/?p=85 , http://www.frc.com.mx/wordpress/?p=85

Feel free to ask for anything, there are a couple of good guides at Creel.

Do you know anything about the Tren Chepe¿?
Is there a Clase Económica train?
It is almost time to go, and I still don't have a good plan.
Anyway, what do you think about catching a train from Los Mochis to Divisadero or Creel.  Then riding around and down to Hermosillo.
I delayed because of weather a few times. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?epac  Always seems to be an orange or red circle on the chart.
Maybe after the baja race I will head out.
I have a Guia Rogi mapa de Mexico.  They have very little detail of the local area.  Any idea if maps of Parque Nacional Cascada de Basaseachi
or Copper Canyon are sold in Los Mochis.  The Library in San Diego has a 1995 book I can read.  In other words, details are difficult to gather from a distance.

Mr Efuentes, the best question to ask you might be
Will you name 3 places a person should surely visit?
Should I ask if there are 1 or 2 places to avoid?

I found this link on your web site

1.- Yes, there is a 2nd class train, leaves Los Mochis at 8am (2 hours after the first class).
2.- I usually ride the train from Mochis to Bahuchivo and then ride to Creel in 2-3 days.
3.- There are plenty of maps and GPS files in my blog.
4.- Hard to get printed maps in Los Mochis.

Places to visit, Creel, Divisadero and Basaseachic (I would do the drop to Batopilas also!!!)
Places to avoid, The lower Sierras and the big towns (Except Creel)

ProTip: Narcos don't usually care for us crazy bikers! (As long as we don't take pictures or goof around a nice weed field!)

I came across this thread looking for more information on touring in Mexico. I rode a loop from Creel to Urique then up the other side of the canyon through Samachique back to Creel this past September. There is more information on my blog
http://wanderingbybicycle.wordpress.com/2013/10/18/loop-through-the-barranca-del-cobre-pushing-and-pedaling-through-the-mountains-of-mexico/,
but to summarize in no particular order:
- The road from Creel is freshly paved until KM 21
- Divisadero has some great mapped and unmapped singletrack
- The decent into Urique is a two hour brake burner
- Climbing back out of the canyon is a test of physical endurance
- The best maps I have found are International Travel Maps 1:1,000,000 scale Mexico Travel Atlas and PDF copies of the Mexico SCT maps that I have available for download at
http://wanderingbybicycle.wordpress.com/maps-and-information/mexico-sct-maps/
As for the dangers of traveling in Mexico, what the news media fails to portray is the majority of the violent crime is one mafia member against another and tourists, as well as most Mexican citizens are pretty safe.
