Has anyone tried running Shimano Dura ace bar end shifters (set friction) on Pauls thumbies with the newer Sram x9/x0 10 speed derailleurs/cassettes?

I'm starting to think about my bike set up for an upcoming international trip where I want to bring my mountain combined with some proven (to me) parts that I have off one of my touring bikes.

Thanks in advance!
Adam.

I wouldn't want to friction shift 10spd unless I had to.

Why not just get a Shimano derailer?

Any reason? I've had tremendous, hassle free shifting success with a nine speed set up. Surely the slightly thinner chain and closer cassette cogs wouldn't pose that much an issue/learning curve that a couple hour ride couldn't help sort out.

Do you think there would be a shifting problem with Srams actuation ratio on a Shimano shifter set to friction?

i can't see why you couldn't friction shift any combination of lever / derailer so long as you had enough throw.

i've tried 9spd. it was OK. on a road bike, maybe, but on a mountain rig i want to click and forget, if possible.
front shifting, for sure, love friction shifting.

That's kind of what I thought too.

I'm just thinking in terms of touring out of country where an x9 replacement shifter would be hard (impossible) to come by if there happened to be a failure for whatever reason or if I rip of my x9 derailleur (more likely) and have to replace it with whatever is available. I prefer click and forget personally but I want something that will be easy to rig in case. That's always been the logic behind dura ace friction shifting on out of country trips for me.

I did this exact same thing last year with my touring bike, and it worked very well. Like you, I was in the middle of nowhere on a mini slef contained tour, so thought this would be a smart way to go... just in case. Although I went 9 speed, figured that a 9 speed chain or cassette would b easier to find if all else failed.

Good luck!!

Paul makes SRAM thumbies as well, why not run these shifters? http://www.sram.com/sram/road/products/500-tt-shifter#/path/term-id/6

I've already got the pauls/dura ace combo that I've been using with some 9 speed shimano derailleurs/cassettes on my touring/commuting bike for a number of years. Just curious if anyone has tried this shifter combo with the newer SRAM 10 speed mountain stuff which I'm running on my mountain bike. I'll probably just set it up and try it to see.

SRAM and Shimano 10spd both have very different pull ratios so other than in friction mode I would be surprised if it works.  SRAM pulls more cable per shift than Shimano.
