i've read all the packing lists I can find, but nobody mentions what particular mount they are running. What's the go-to Tour Divide approved mount?

Just something like this,

https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-11023-00-Colorado-Oregon-Mount/dp/B0012MI7QE/

+ Lanyard - ESSENTIAL!

In a pinch, you can make a lanyard out of a keychain ring and some sort of accessory chord. Thread the keychain ring through the layard slot on the bottom of the unit, then tie the chord to the keychain ring. Tie a loop at the end of your chord, and attach is to your handlebars with a hitch.

Here's the lanyard setup. Simple + cheap. Those knots are just fishermans.

I would do something similar for your Spot - I hear about too many dropped Spots on the TD!

Thanks! That's the one I've been looking at.
I hear you on the lanyards...I was one of those poor fools backtracking up a pass looking for his spot.

Totally from first-hand experience Smiley

Losing a GPS is pretty much the worst. I find the mounting point for the eTrex to be one of its weaknesses, unfortunately - although I do think etrex 20/30 is a great unit for the race, given its runtime and that it just needs AA's.

I didn't know that a SPOT has a place for a lanyard, until Matt pointed it out to me. It's wide enough to accept a zip tie easily.

yes, make a leash. no need for metal, just a piece of cord, pass it trough, tie a loop, make it long enough to loop around bars and pass the gps through before sliding into the clip:

I second the idea of straddling the mount on the stem, if its off to one side mine always wanders to the narrow part of the bar then flops around. Its the worst. I would love to find a bolt on mount.

I 3D printed my own mount, but it broke after some use. Too thin. Instead of trying another I found these parts.

I bought this:

And this:

This mounting kit from Klite incorporates a K-Edge GoPro mount, so you can mount both an Etrex and a GoPro or a light.

I designed and 3D printed this stem cap mount. It survived the CTR this year and all the training leading up to it but would probably break with a good wack.

I use the factory mount.

It works flawlessly after adding some gaffer tape on the handlebar beneath it.  It's a no residue, textured tape I had lying around. It provides enough friction so that the mount doesn't spin around the bar.

That and a safety leash and I'm good to go.

That's what I do too....stock mount, hockey tape on the bars, old camera lanyard as a leash.
