Rob,

I have alternate Thursday - Sunday days off.  In another couple of weeks, I would be able to do
Sunday - Monday, depending on the specific week.  I am still gethering gear, but should be ready to go soon.

Want to pick a specifi cweekend?

A friend of mine proposed a combo trip -- one I must consider.

Stash the bikes at Spencer Meadows just outside the LAVO boundary.  Drive to Butte Lake in the NE corner of LAVO.  Paddle down Butte Lake to the south end, and stash the canoe.  Backpack diagonally SW across the Park to Twin Meadows/Spencer Meadow.  Retrieve the bikes and bikepack back to Butte Lake.  Hike to the south end of Butte Lake and retrieve the canoe, paddle back to the vehicle.

hmmmm.... the trip sounds intriguing...

Most intriguing!

I've been thinking of a bike-towed canoe trailer for trips like this...

Rob,

Weekend of 8/8 or 8/15 looks good for me.  Anybody else in
SoCal want to get in on a shakedown cruise one of those
weekends?  Not speaking for Rob, but I am still pretty new
to lightweight bikepacking, and I will be trying out a bunch
of new stuff, from the gear to riding loaded to...

OK sounds good.  Either of those weekends works for me.  Were you going to get a Monday off to do this? I have to work on Saturdays.

I am planning a 5-10 day bikepacking trip in the outback of CA. Planning to start cycling out of San Diego. Are there any updates of these tracks and maps..?
Thank you

Marc

Marc, when are you planning on doing your trip?

Stagecoach 400 is the best known route from SD, best in late fall to early spring.  https://socalenduro.wordpress.com/stagecoach-400/

Rich Wolf put together three loops that can be done together or individually  https://www.julianbikepackchallenge.com/

There are also a few routes on bikepacking.com that are mostly fire road, and also the Tour de los Padres from Frazier Park to Santa Barbara https://tourdelospadres.weebly.com/

Plenty to ride here, but the best season for a lot of rides is in cooler weather Nov-March.

I've ridden portions of the SF Peninsula Traverse and absolutely loved it. It is really amazing what wilderness is available, just a few miles from the multi-million dollar homes of the silicon valley hyper wealthy.

It probably won't actually be too hot out, since you are right in the fog zone, much of the time. During a heat wave one summer (highs well into the 90s in the valley) I went out at the crack of dawn and actually found frost on the grass.

Middle and higher elevations should be nice end of September, with nights starting to get cold.  But lower elevations will still be hot often through late October, or even later if we get Santa ana winds.  You might be able to cherry pick higher elevation parts of the routes or head up to the Sierras.  The Caldera 250/500 route should be good that time, and is around when they run the grand depart for it.  Might fit your time frame as well.
