You may find this article from the Salsa Bikes blog informative.

Hi thanks but it says about cranks but no details about which crankset!
I have a new Shimano XT 3 x crank, which is not going to work,  know of the Surly OD crankset (out of stock in NZ) and would like to know of more options?

Pretty much any standard MTB crank could work, but it really depends on what you are trying to do, your frame design, and gearing choice. My Krampus came stock with a Zee crank or something. Worked fine for 1x10. Its working fine for my Rohloff.

1x10?
2x10?
3x9 or 3x8? or 3x10?
The 3x I think is out unless you go to the Surly.

How wide is your builder doing the BB shell?
How long are the chain stays, further back the wheel is theoretically you'll have more clearance...

Etc. Etc.
I can't really answer even if I had that information... its a geometry game.

Hi Guy's and Lady's
I have just ordered a Jones Plus (ie:29+)
BB is 73mm wide
Crank size i'm after are 170mm
Rear hub is 135mm wide
Bike colour is Blue
I plan to going 2x (may end up running a Rohloff Gearhub)

As I said I know off the Surly OD crank's
Trying to find out about the new Boost148 cranks that are coming?? https://youtu.be/xauVb0sAgM4
I know that I can use the 2 outer ring's on a XT 3x crank's (but need lower gearing then a 32!)

So are there any more 29+ crank's that you know off???

Thanks Pete  icon_scratch

If you go rohloff you will void the warranty of you go smaller than certain ratios.

What does Jones say?

A?
Void warranty?? because I may ride a 29+ with a Rohloff??

Jeff Jones like Derailleurs not Hub gears!
But I have been riding will Rohloff Speedhub for over 10 years and load's of hard mountain biking....

If your talking about Jeff and which crank's well he said so new cranks may be coming

I think what bmike-vt is trying to say is that if you're lower than a certain gear ratio (ring/cog-wise), Rohloff will not warranty the hub, even though it'll probably never break with the force you're able to apply by yourself.  Not sure how much, or if crank arm length plays into the warranty junk.  They're just covering their asses.  Sheldon Brown did a decent job explaining it here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/rohloff-impressions.html

It has nothing to do with wheel size, but ring to cog ratio.

Quote
Smallest permissible sprocket ratios

The primary sprocket ratio used with the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 (e.g. 42:16) converts the slow rotational speed at the crank into a fast rotational speed at the rear sprocket and reduces the input torque for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 in the same proportion. To prevent overstraining the hub, a minimum factor of 1.9 must be used. This minimum factor equates to a primary transmission ratio of:- 34:17, 32:16, 30:15 and 26:13. These SPEEDHUB 500/14 ratios resemble a derailleur transmission of 20:36.
Larger chainrings can be used without exceptions.

Attention!

If mounted on a tandem or if the rider weighs over 100kg, the minimum factor of 2.50 must not be undercut. This equates to primary transmission ratios of:- 32:13, 38:15, 40:16 and 42:17.
Again, larger chainrings can be used without exceptions.

You can certainly mount a double or a triple with a Rohloff.... (not sure why you would need to, but everyone has their own use case) - but you shouldn't go any smaller than their ratios... although many people do, without trouble.

Just give Jeff Jones a call. I'm sure he knows alot more about what cranks fit the Jones Plus than anyone here! And from all I've heard, he's more than happy to talk to you about it. I guess you need to decide if you're going 2x10 or Rohloff, as that would influence crank choice.

Looks I was asking about 2x cranks that work with 29+!
Not at any point have I said I'm going 2x Rohloff! ! (Just dum)
As I said it's 2x cranks and derailleurs or a Rohloff hub.
I was looked after for years by Rohloff New Zealand.
Have did a lot of people test ride my bike (bike's) and pay a Rohloff hub.
I asked because I was thinking that some of you may have see new cranks coming out?
Like I know about the new Fox 32 forks?
Which cranks are you fitting to Surly ECR? Need the same cranks

Pete

Ha ha
Starting to think the same thing too
I have a pair of XT 3x cranks only rode for 500km's and have a singlespeed DX chainring also just setting here.
Having the support of Puresports NZ (the Rohloff NZ wholesaler) it will have to be a Rohloff after all.
Thanks Guy's

I'm looking at Krampus crank options now too.
Current setup is
Krampus
Knard/Rabbit Hole
Some cheap heavy race face crank, 48 mm chainline, 32t single ring
Rear hub is Hope singlespeed, with cogs from a 9 speed cassette. Biggest cog is 34t.
So 32/34 is a pretty high low gear, in western Colorado.
I'd like to go 2x7, and am curious if a 2x Boost crank would work? That's a 52 mm chainline, cheaper than the OD crank too.
I may go manual shifting (no FD that way but still a bailout gear for long climbs), with 30/22 or something......
So the narrower cassette in the back will help the chainline situation too.

UPDATE:
Right after typing the above I discovered the cheap heavy Race Face DH crank has a 4 mm stack of plastic spacers on the left side. These can be moved around to change chainline! So I moved the whole 4 mm to the drive side and presto, now I can run a granny ring.
I had an Actiontec Ti 20t laying around and the crank was already modified for it, so now that's on there, I can run 32 or 20 up front manual shift, with 13-34 in the back. Call it a 1.5 x 7...

Hi there
Things have changed for the better how.

I sold my 1st Jones Plus 24" because I was too big for me!

I build up a Jones 29"er which I still have and plan to keep riding

But

I have just finished building up a new Jones 23" Spaceframe Plus (which at last is my size  thumbsup

So I used a Shimano XT 8000 "B-Spec" crankset which works great

All the Best
