Gregg, yes it is going to be vastly different this year. There is likely going to be some snow riding/ hiking. The start date has been set for March 25 since last Autumn or so. I believe that is more or less spring break for a lot of the universities and colleges, etc. around here. That is also Easter weekend. If a big winter storm is hitting that weekend (which is probably about a 50-50 chance), the start date will be postponed until April 1st. The death mud sections of the Carrizo Plain need at least 2-3 days of no precipitation to be rideable.
Stagecoach 400 start date has changed from early February to March 11. 10 or 11 days of recovery time is not much recovery time if you are planning on doing both. I guess the question is how many people out there plan to do both?
Erin, So did you get any push back from guys who want to do both? Is March 25th the official day? Thanks! Pete

Unfortunately I had to call my race yesterday. I tore/popped something in my knee Sunday AM. Tried to push through but rode back to Durango yesterday. Thanks Stephan for a great event. My donation will be going out to the trail foundation this week.
As for hikers. At this point it's not what happened or who's fault, its about the perception of our "sport" and this event. Hopefully the rider does come forward and apologizes. I saw 3 sets of hikers and I was somewhere in 20th place through Kennebec, two women' with headlights down low, and older fella coming off indian ridge, and a young women after Kennebec with two dogs on leash, I'm guessing this must be the person who lost her dog. I yielded the trail and exchanged pleasantries, she didn't mention anything to me, but did seem frazzled.
continued luck to all the racers out there -
Pete

Stefan, I signed up and paid my private spot but it never asked for my ESN or shared page URL. I sent an email to Scott which bumped me to Matthew Lee so I sent it to him too. Can you help?
Same thing happened to me, Matthew took care of it. If you sent him your esn and shared page you're probably good to go -

How's that Oware bivy hold up in the rain? I've worked for Outwardbound in the past. They supply our tarps, gators, and some other stuff. I like the construction.
I've not used it hard rain, I carry a small GoLite tarp that I get under when the rain comes in, so I can't really speak to it's direct rain performance. I'm not surprised Outwardbound uses their stuff, it's bomber and still looks new after 2 seasons.

haydukelives! I missed that you were asking about the $17 version. I used one as part of my sleep system in '13 CTR. It held up fine, but doesn't breath well. I personally wouldn't use it again. I've been using the SOL breathable $40 version as a bag or external to a sleeping bag depending on weather along with and external bivy from Oware that has a screen to keep the bugs at bay. But for $17 bucks if you're going light and fast and don't plan on sleeping much, it's a tempting option.

Just checking in with the forum. Planning on attempting the CTR for my first time this year. I'm currently getting bags together and training on my next hard for the race.
Anyone got any feedback on light bivy sacks? I'm looking at the different SOL bags. Wondering if the base $17 model will hold up for 5-6 nights. Anyone got any experience with these?
I've been using the non zippered version and like it, here is a good review with more details: http://bikepackersmagazine.com/sol-escape-bivvy/

I'll play! Here is my rig from CTR 2013 Niner One9 34x23 gearing I think my gear was about 17 pounds without food and water if I remember correctly (I might not be) The bike was around 20-21 lbs AC Race wheels, Maxxis Icon 2.35 up front, 2.2 in the back No Sleeping bag; Used an ultalight bivy, Tarp, space blanket and sleeping bag liner Revelate Bags - Have never let me down Flat Pedals and 5.10 shoes - zero blisters with over 100 miles of pushing my bike (estimated) Clothing: I used an adidas Outdoor ultralight wind jacket, a micro puffy vest, rain pants and jacket, extra shorts, shirt, socks Sawyer water filter. I broke a bag out there, but had two thankfully.
Good luck with your fist race Addy - keep us posted on how it goes

I raced CTR in the Ascents last year. They were great except the the inside of the forefoot is wide and sharp. The insides of my heels were a bloody mess from getting hit as I took steps. Every night when I put my other pair of socks back on the scabs would be one with my socks and peel off. If you go with them I would consider running a belt sander on the inside of the outsole. The shoes held together really well though, I was really happy with them. I think I'll be running these adidas with stealth bottoms this year though: http://www.rei.com/product/866101/adidas-terrex-solo-stealth-hiking-shoes-mensFull disclosure: I now work for adidas, but I didn't when I bought these. I did a 2 day trip on the Koko last month with them and they were great.
