@Woodland,
CTR 2012, first day, after having been pinned-down on the Kenosha side of Georgia Pass for about an hour, I finally make it over Georgia and descend down below treeline, just in time to setup my tarp before another round of storms comes rolling thru. Long story short, I've never had lightning strike that close to me. Usually it's flash-bang, between the light and sound. That time the sound came before the "L" in "flash". The lightning seemed brighter than daylight and for a surprisingly long time. Nothing like lying under a tarp, getting pelted by hail and rain, having never felt that helpless and wanting to just snap my fingers and transport the hell out of there. I had three series of storms roll thru that night, about every 90 minutes, and the last one was the crescendo which I will never forget. What topped off the evening was while pretending to sleep for a couple hours, after the storms quit rolling thru, it was oh so quiet by then, I was startled by the sound of a tree snapping and then the slow-motion snap, crackle, pop of many limbs as it crashed into other trees on the way to the ground, what felt like less than a hundred feet away. No wind when it happened. Gravity? The causality of the lightning strike? A sign to get the flip out of there? My palms sweat just thinking about that night...

I was out there that night too. It was my only attempt of CTR thus far...and that night was legendary. I may try again someday...I made it to mile 288 before pulling the plug. But yes, that night was MEAN.

Lots of ghosts out there...did those people quit, or not officially?

Is anyone else having trouble seeing all the map tiles spool up on trackleaders? I get the whole site, but only the upper left corner shows up and it isn't really centered on the race course either; more like SE Colorado (Trinidad, etc.)

For those southbound trainers, Waterton Canyon is open again.

For kicks, I looked at the CTR Trackleaders website this morning. Am I to understand there are still racers on course...with this snow? It's been a month....maybe people just did not call in.

Is Jill H. back in the game?

I live in Roxborough, which is only about 2 miles from the trailhead...as for a watering hole closer to the trail head, you may consider the Roxborough Tavern.

I don't get out much, so I can't say how it is. But it is close! I will talk to them and try and get  a feel for what it's like there. BTW, I attempted the 2012 CTR; I failed but I am considering trying it again next summer as a tour. Just don't have the time to pay my dues for that kind of an effort! I can at least know what it's like to try. You all are amazing athletes, putting it all out there for only the reward of doing what you love! Will post more later...

Thanks for the heads up TobyGadd...good to know! I initially just wanted to save money and weight by going low-tech, but as it is turning out I am not sure I am really saving anything as I search for quality v-brake stuff that isn't used up. But I also wanted to do this on my old Schwinn Homegrown (hence the username) so I guess I really didn't have any choice anyway with that mindset. I swear, next year I am going to come into this decade and get a 29er with discs! I guess I will need to bring lots of pads, as you cannot really be sure the shops will have rim pads anymore. I've gone too far with this bike to change my mind now so I will just hope for the best this year.

I have also had a mechanical setback taking 10+ days. I am running v-brakes, and my rear crossmax blew apart. I have to have a wheel custom-built that is rim-brake compatible and strong, not something you can buy off the shelf that is of any kind of quality. Like a dork I ordered a Chris King in green, and of course they had to make them as none were in stock. I should have just gotten what they always have; red, black or silver! Anyway, the bike shop guy warned me but I didn't heed it as I was just thinking that if I am paying for a brand new wheel of this caliber, it will be exactly what I want. Joke is on me as I wait for them to get the hub, and I can only train on roads until the wheel is built (right now is a critical training period for CTR, too!). Anyway...
Any info on getting a spot tracker early? I am thinking of starting an ITT on the 29th...

I am taking an Esbit Stove w/4 pellets for times when I need a "real meal"  fix. Living on power bars and junk can be a real downer, discouraging one from eating and you need that fuel.
On another note, has anyone heard if they are having a cut-off of the number of people that can participate? Just wondering if, after pouring myself into this for the last year, if there is a chance I won't be able to participate...
