Well heck looks like I haven't been on the site in two years, I am a recumbent trike rider & builder I ride mostly off paved surfaces now-a-days and been on trikes since the very early 1980's. I have been stuck as the only caregiver for a parent with ALZ since 2015 and really haven't been able to get out a ride any major rides since the last recon ride on TDR route. I think i have two or three Seattle To Portlands, The Salem Gravel grinder, and possibly one or two other longer riders since summer 2015. This situation is coming to an end and I am planning for what comes next. Mostly include some sort of Nomadic life with ALLOT more cycling, either car/van/RV or possibly bicycle camper nomadic life. Hope everyone is doing well in this times, RIDE ON.

Thanks much for the info, there are posted alternatives to several of those places on the TDR website, that said yes there may be sections of walking. I have had done most of the GDMBR US route on solo trike several times. I am mostly interested in sections that have changed since 2013 and where physical clearance is limited or the terrain is so extreme like a washed out bridge in Canada, or a narrow bridge, gate, fence hoping, water crossing.

Trikes have actually done the TDR route several times. They aren't like a bike where you pick a choose a line, there more like a military half track where you just plow right through everything. Sine I cant leave home for extend periods of time I had been pre-running sections of this course since around 2012.

I posted this to FB group but figured i would try hear as well. Since I am the sole caregiver for family with ALZ the only way I can do TDR this year is if I bring them along on the tandem trike. My questions having not done any of the Canadian section and not seen allot of the alternatives since 2103 is there any place on the route that trail access is limited and a 42" wide trike would not physically fit? I know The Wall connector section is a not possible based on pics and video I have seen.

Has anyone heard anything about new custom regulations at the boarder? I have friends in Canada that wont come to the USA for yearly events anymore, because of these new regulations. I haven't found any threads or obvious data about them in my searches of state and federal websites.

If this does turn out to be an issue would anyone consider a restart of the GDMBR race? I am trike rider and that first climb out of Banff I carried my trike the entire way on my back. No way are you riding that, so starting at Rooseville suits me better. Or I have to learn to ride a Big Kids Bike all over again and go wedgie 2 wheeler (deal with all the saddle sores and butt pain issues, I never have on a trike).

Once agin this is on my list to do; the whole route start to finish in one ride, vs riding sections when I am available over several trips. However My situation as the sole caregiver for a parent with ALZ still lives my race plans up in the air. As a trike rider I just ship my bike complete no box, just roll in right up to the check-in counter.

I am planning on either driving or biking out to the start this year, unfortunately I haven't been able to get anyone that can stay with my parent with ALZ and her dog during the race. I might have someone for short events after July though. Route66 is still viable.

One of our local cyclists here in Portland, Oregon is a cancer survivor and is doing a TransAmericam journey (to raise awareness for cancer) solo on a recumbent bicycle with little no support and funds. He is interviewing other cancer survivors as he travels the country on his bike. Lets get the word out to all trail angels and media outlets that can help him complete his journey and help produce the documentary about his trip.

If it wasn't for that last bit of uphill grade (which probably feels like a mountain now) Kato could probably see the finish looks like about 30mins to go now.

Looks like Rocket John is out, again anyone here what happened? I was happy to see him using his Quest as this is his daily ride so he should be more comfortable on it than last years ER GRR. Though I am not surprised to see him DNF, Johns a great guy and was pretty darn fast in years gone bye; but he has got several years on me and I have body pains so I would expect him to have some as well.

if anyone knows what happened let me know.

Oh yeah sorry I don't get on here much anymore I am the sole full time 24/7 caregiver for my mother with ALZ, so unless she goes with me I don't get out of the house much. She does have a new trike and can ride about 14 miles 22 on a good day, but she doesn't have much strength so she is dog slow top speed around 6 mph.

I am interested in what bike & tires everyone plans to use, and projected completion time. My plans for doing it on a trike are shot to hello because there is not currently a trike made light enough that my knees could handle the distance. I am looking at other options in alternative bikes now and chatting with some potential sponsors.

I am just curious if anyone here is doing the Oregon Outback (besides Nathan) and there thoughts on race strategy? My plan is under 32 hours.

I was so interested in doing this myself, but as a caregiver for two family members I just can't get away for that long. So this does open up another chance at TDR for me this year. Hope you all have a great inaugural event and stay safe. I will probably make it down for the start it's a nice easy day ride from Portland.

It may be different for a you on a two wheel MTB; but on our trikes we run Schwalbe Smart Sam Evo DD tubeless exclusively for off road. We use a Stan's/Rolf rim. Zero issues with punctures so far I use Stan's/Doc Blue tire sealant. I even broke a valve stem on a stick and rode a rail trail home 12 miles on a flat SS tire and the tire survived although I rode carefully and slow; trikes have very little weight on the rear wheel. These also wear really well when used as a commuter tire on tarmac and fairly quiet.

I also like the old Marathon XR, Marathon Plus Tour, and Marathon Plus MTB.
