I have the PN60w Spot combo. I like it quite a alot for hiking & backpacking. Its not quite integrated as it is 2 separate units with both using 2AA batteries. I dont find this setup to be all that bike friendly. the available mounts are bulky and akward. Maybe a custom mounting system could be the answer to that though. It is likely not as light as a Garmin GPS unit along with a 2nd gen Spot.

One thing that is really nice is that you can send(out going only) custom text messages from the PN60 Spot combo.

Do we have any artist on the board? I wonder if a better approach would be to have someone draw something up and then ask for Scotts approval to have it printed. Once he gives approval we could get some quotes and then do preorders for tees and jerseys.

Thoughts?

Just browsing Rockywoods during lunch and it looks like they have black and red vx21 in stock. Kinda sounds like the OP is looking for other stuff, but thought some may be interested.

The instructions say the units needs an unobstructed view of the sky. SPOT does make a case so you could either get that or try to duplicate it.

During some experimenting I have tried my SPOT Communicator inside the top of my pack and done fine YMMV.

I attach mine to the outside and on top of my backpack. I dont like the blinky lights in my sight while riding. Placing it inside the bag will cause poor signal and may miss a few check in messages.

I am pretty sure the steer tube on that bike is neither 1 1/8 or 1 1/5. It is closer to 1 1/5, but cannondale built it just far enough off to try and limit user to only cannondale stems.

Sorry I cant help with Fred Bar info

I am getting ready to order one from 12wheels here on this forum. I've seen pics of his harness and own a few other items. He has good quality, reasonable prices, and ships quickly. Look him up.

On the PLB Spot threads, I always recommend that the user talk to their S&R crews and ask how they handle SPOT/PLB emergency request. A lot of people just assume S&R will jump in the truck and start heading out to get them, but a lot more goes into the rescue before they leave the shop.

Thanks for the link. I will read it to see how similar it is to the info I got from El Paso County S&R.

I have  the Double Rainbow. I went with the double for the additional room inside with only a minor weight penalty. I am glad I did. The size is just right for me(I'm a big guy). The solo rainbow would have been cramped.

One thing I noticed is most of Henry's tents that use tent poles come with a packed size of 20 X 4. I suspect the reason for this is all of his poles measure 20". I know the poles from my DR do. I think the tent without poles will stuff down to 15X4 which would work better strapped to the bars. I could either relocate the poles or see if i can have a shorter pair made.

I am very happy with my DR tent but I do like the Moment design better. Maybe they will have a Moment2 available when I wear the DR out.

I'd say find a way to use the bag you already have. It will prolly be a little warm in summer but you could unzip and be comfy. I think you will find the packed size of you bag more problematic than its weight.

Are you thinking about how to get some of your gear strapped to the bike rather than loaded in a backpack? Are you going to use some sort of rack?

As for food for a 1 nighter, just take ready to eat meals(pb&j, shelf stable meat on a bagel) so you dont have carry a stove or extra water to rehydrate. If you are going to carry a filter/purifier, 70oz will work if not I would take a couple full water bottles along.

Another thing to consider is the rental gear from REI. Its a good way to try stuff before you commit to a certain gear.

The Bivy alone will not be enough to keep you comfy. They are designed to have your sleeping bag stuffed inside and that gives you a system that will be wind and water resistant.

Hey Alex, Welcome to the site.

Have you considered just using a tarp large enough to cover a couple people in sleeping bags? If you plan your trip around good weather a tarp will be plenty shelter. http://www.rei.com/product/808940/kelty-noahs-tarp-12-x-12   I'd think if you are OK with the Bivy idea you would just fine with your bag under a tarp.

If a tarp isn't appealing I'd suggest the bivy route before using a 5+ lb tent.
Try to buy gear you will continue to use if you find bikepacking to be something you would like to continue doing. I bet you would be looking to replace the mentioned tent before your second trip.

Sleeping bags are tough to recommend. This http://www.rei.com/product/778156/rei-halo-40-sleeping-bag bag can be had had for a little over a hundred till the 24th and would likely do just fine.

What do you have in mind for route? an out and back on the CT?
