I have no idea what Justin might be smoking there, but something about his photo captures an odd part of this bikepacking subculture that is damn cool.  Kudos to everyone that not only finished but got out there and put forth a huge effort.  Finishing is cool and all, being alive to ride it again is...well, even better!

The last guy I know who filtered from that lake got sick and I've heard it's not the best tasting.  If you take a full load from Cottonwood (100oz plus 3 bottles), you should be able to get to the Verde).  Sucks climbing with all that water weight, but the options are pretty limited. (ie, Coyote Springs on the west side of Mingus).

Also, Andersen Mesa received 0.44" of rain yesterday...hopefully that's it for this storm so it has a chance to dry over the next several days.

yep, mighty impressive run by flatlander boy Josiah.  I guess doing all those roadie miles against the wind came in handy.  He's moved into 3rd place; hopefully he can keep the momentum.

I'm sure Josiah fully enjoyed the sweet "singletrack" on Andersen Mesa...  Kinda wonder if he's gonna shack up in Flag for the night and recharge for a run tomorrow.

All,
Joe at Sunday Cycles in PHX recently acquired a shuttle van capable of carrying 11 riders and bikes.  I stopped by and spoke with him today and he is available to get up to 11 of us from Picket Post (where we'd meet him the afternoon of April 2nd) down to Parker Canyon Lake.  The following people have currently expressed interest and we'd have room for more (and thus the cost/ person would be less).
me (Ray H)
Bob M
Arturo C
Phil
Don Rose
Ryan Mostue

If you're interested, please let me know.  At least 3 weeks out, I'll have to ask for committed $ from people.

thx!   Ray

All,
I am working to coordinate a shuttle from Picket Post down to Parker Canyon Lake on Thursday, April 2nd.  If there are people that need a ride from Tucson, we may be able to work that out as well.  We did this 2 years ago and it worked out well and was quite reasonably priced....still working with a phx bike shop who has a shuttle van on price.
If you're interested, send me a note at rhemmele@gmail.com.  Not looking for firm commitments quite yet, but will be soon so we can lock down cost per person.
cheers...
Ray

I love that seemingly random GWT sign out in the middle of nowhere...right about when you're trying to find a rideable line through all that lava rock.

What a blast...tough as hell, but that's why it's so good.

Pleasure meeting everyone and look forward to more adventures w/ my new friends!

here's a couple gpx's of the bypass options...
bypass.gpx will get you from Marshall Lake to where the track crosses the road
bypass#2 continues on the pavement and takes a short dirt road (Wiemer Springs Rd) to where the trail crosses.  I've ridden that part a bunch and there's only one little stretch past there that might be muddy but the rain gage on the south end of the lake showed a lot less rain.  Otherwise, as Tim said, it's a fun section of AZT that wraps around the east side of Mormon Mtn.

Well, last night it was looking like Andersen Mesa didn't get too much rain..early this morning, it appears that story changed.  The rain gage out there is reading 0.72" as of 9AM.  IMHO, that either means...
1. Starting at the same spot, but diverting to Lake Mary Road at Marshall Lake and taking that down to where the course crosses Lake Mary Road.  Obviously, that is "off course".  Note that that doesn't get you completely out of the woods since there is some sticky stuff before you get to Marshall lake and after you cross Lake Mary Road.
2. Starting at I-17 and Schnebly Hill Rd:  They didn't get nearly as much rain down by Munds  (0.17") and so that would eliminate the death mud march.
3. Start in Sedona

Thoughts?

The key is to leave Schnebly as soon as you can see...and then in Cottonwood, tell the BBQ place to be quick...(they are really SLOW).

Wyattt...minimize weight...pushing a 50+ lb bike up Mingus and Bill Williams blows bad.  Personally, I ditch the stove...plenty of resupply on this route and you can do without that stuff.  Lots of water too although you'll want to fill up in Cottonwood and at the Verde.

I'm in for another!  Great loop and such a fun time.  No ITT for me this year...wanna enjoy the "off the clock time".  Not many of these silly things where we can race and socialize for 3-4 days straight.  Too bad beer sherpa Mark Allen isn't riding this year...that dude schlepped a 12pack of coors from Munds in 2012...
I was planning on stashing a cooler of beer, cigarettes and pot brownies at camp #1, any issue with that?  lol...
