Mike,
The color coding represents the location or bag. Green is wearing, orange is seat bag, etc.

I took rain pants. I hated riding in them. They just don't fit right. So they are gone. I am riding with 3/4 knickers that are a heavier weight through Wyoming (always seemed to be cold enough to that point).

You are right on the tooth care. There was a lot of stuff there. Deleted. Thanks.

The rope is twine. about 3ft. Good guess. That whole line (except tubes and pump) on the doc fits into an Altoids container. So the pads and cable are a little insurance that ride in that box. Same with spare cleats. But you're right. Its a fear. But one worth carrying in that little box.

Will probably not take the filter and just go with iodine tablets. Up until last night I was taking a frame bag with a camelback in it. With the filter in-line. Thats gone now in lieu of 1ltr bottles and some tablets.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Love it. Keep it coming.

You have patches on there twice. Safety pins,  Cleats (maybe one cleat and a pair of bolts), Valve stem, bag balm and A&D (I can think of a couple other products that will serve the purpose of both).... I'd go without that stuff.  Hopefully you have something other than ProGold in the vial.  Lose one of the tubes.  Carry a small bottle of sealant instead if you are running tubeless.....which you should.  Get a quick link and don't bother with the extra chain links.  Carry that cool little plug tool and some rubber band pieces for plugs (again...if you are running tubeless).

Yeah.  Packing fear.  I worked at REI in the 90's.  There was this video floating around about the cult'ish group of AT hikers that were rolling through with 5 pound base weights.  This one dude called himself The Wolf.  He's some sort of born again Christian singer/healer whatever now.  He made a video that started off with a graph of weight vs. fear.  Fear being the independent variable and weight being dependent.  He never really talked about the willingness to suffer.  Suffering can only be sustained for so long until it starts to be detrimental to performance.  Finding that threshold and not going over it is key.  Let it stay too high too long, and you may wind up with a hole in your foot or ass or palm and then you'll have to drop out.  Go without sleep and you may wake up nowhere near your bike on the side of the mountain somewhere.

See you at the 12 Hours in the Wild West?
Nope.....AZT 300.

I haven't noticed a slower boot up.  My batteries seem to last just as long....or as little since I always seem to be zooming in and out and scroll around looking for different stuff.  I've gotten very attached to my gps and totally prefer it over paper maps.  I'm running a dyno hub and will be able to recharge batteries easily so battery life is not a concern for me.  I'm running an Etrex 20.  I usually get about 2 days out of my batteries if I try to conserve.

GPS question:  I have loaded my Garmin Oregon 450 with the Garmin US 100K Topo maps, which look great, about the right level of detail. But Canada remains a blank except for the minimal World Basemap. I suppose I could just follow the purple line across a mostly blank GPS screen, but prefer to have more context. I couldn't find an equivalent Canada map, and I don't want to load a lot of 24K maps as they use a lot of memory. What have others done?

Nat

I got really awesome base maps for almost the entire country and western Canada on my gps with no memory issues at all.  I got them for free from GPSDepot.  For the lower 48, they're pretty amazing.  I'm not sure about Canada.

Ummm...it will be less than a week for JayP.....unless he's not much of a hiker.

I predict that at least half a dozen will camp at the border.  2 dozen will camp at the Parker Lake Trailhead. Another dozen will pay to camp at Parker Lake proper.  With the exposure from Outside Magazine, it won't be DHS/Border choppers buzzing overhead.......maybe a  couple of GoPro drones this year.  LOL.

You sure you don't want to try to create a "double face palm" smiley for that?  lol

A question I have is if I have to show up the afternoon prior to the start and bring the extra food / water for the nights stay, are there trash cans at the start point or will I have to carry everything with me till I find the first dumpster?

There are no trash receptacles at the trailheads, but there are always others' loved ones there to help you out with that sort of stuff.  My wife took out quite a bit of trash last year and there's always plenty of folks with plenty of water there.  That's just the way we roll in the southwest.....we're all a bit water paranoid.

Thanks Yogi.  I already have the 10k version in my gps and was wondering if I would have any difficulty following it.  I've read that some of the trail is fairly faint and hard to follow at night and I wasn't sure if keeping all of the points would make any difference on the gps or not.  Unless I hear differently I'll just stick with the 10k.
I've run the 10k version both times I've done it.  I only ran into problems when I was zoomed in too close.  My first year I found myself off trail a bunch when heading to the Freeman Cache in the middle of the night, but it was no big deal and I blame it more on being tired.  That's the only area the trails are faint in my opinion.

It will not convert to a 15 TA.  The rear will convert to 12x142.

Thanks for the props Yogi.

I don't do the sling except on request.  I was doubtful of its effectiveness.  I make all two compartment bags to fit a 100 oz bladder in the top compartment.  Hose port is now standard issue.  There's usually room for other stuff.

I recently made a frame bag for a small full suspension BMC that fit a 100 oz bladder.  The new camelbak bladders with new HUGE caps may not work.  Check out the bladders from Platypus to save space.
53  Forums / Classifieds / Flyweight wheels....crest/DT Swiss $350 on: February 06, 2014, 02:03:59 PM
Someone out there has a small friend who needs these wheels.  The rims are VERY good....no dents and they have never been trued since I built them up last year.  There are some scratches on one of the rims.  The rims and spokes are only a year old ridden about 25 times by my 120 lb wife.  The hubs are pre-2010 DT Swiss 240s IS disc standard QR.  I think one of them has ceramic bearings.  They are both smooth and the freehub is in great shape having received regular maintenance.

Crest rims, DT Revolution spokes (2X/1X front) (2X rear).  Alloy nips.  Gorilla tape rim strips.  Stan's valve stems.  IS disc.  No skewers.

Find me a flyweight for the wheels.  I need to free up another hook in my garage.

$350 plus shipping.

The new 2014 Epic is much larger in the triangle than the 2013.  I just made bags for both models for one customer a couple weeks ago.  The 2014 has 2 bottle cages and has a third bottle bolt hole for some weird box that holds tools or something.  I hate specialized, but that 2014 model is pretty sweet.

The Giant has a nice space in the main triangle as well.

Separ.  It was alive and kicking when I passed through this past weekend.  Will check again in April when I go through for AZT.  May be a good idea to call before leaving Silver City for south bounders and before starting for us nobos.

If you aren't willing to embrace technology, maybe you should walk the route in moccasins or ride a horse or something.  If you aren't willing to do that, then whittle your bike out of wood.  This is a technology driven sport.  Satellite tracking, titanium frames, waterproof paper maps, XPAC laminated fabrics, dynamo hubs, waterproof breathables, phones with camera and gps, UV water filters....shall I go on?

Nobody says you have to use any of this stuff.  There's way more to this sport than technology.

If you want to be a pro, you've got to use it a lot.  I still miss turns when using the gps. I've used my gps for well over 5,000 miles of various routes.  I space off a lot, have it zoomed in too close/too far, and confuse colors of your track with colors on your base map.  At worst, I've lost a few hundred vertical feet and no more than half a mile.  In total, probably around 3 or 4 miles.  It just takes lots of practice.  I scoured the internet for info on how to get base maps...I have every part of the continent worthy of mountain biking on my gps.  The main thing is to learn how to put your track/route on your gps, set it to a color that stands out on your map, then go riding.

I'm sure some will think I'm being dickish, but it appears that about a third of the comments so far have been about dynamo systems and lights.  There is a thread for dynamos under the "Question and Answer" portion of the forum.  Since the "what tire is best" Q will be beaten like a dead horse and take up another third of this thread and the thread will eventually approach 100+ pages, please take all dynamo and lighting questions to the Q&A portion of the forum.

Let's try to keep this thread to Q's specific about the Divide Route and more Divide stoke/links to experiences/etc.

The shoe/sock/vapor barrier problem would be easy to solve if you did a Nobo. Just sayin'. ;P
