1.- Yes, there is a 2nd class train, leaves Los Mochis at 8am (2 hours after the first class).
2.- I usually ride the train from Mochis to Bahuchivo and then ride to Creel in 2-3 days.
3.- There are plenty of maps and GPS files in my blog.
4.- Hard to get printed maps in Los Mochis.

Places to visit, Creel, Divisadero and Basaseachic (I would do the drop to Batopilas also!!!)
Places to avoid, The lower Sierras and the big towns (Except Creel)

ProTip: Narcos don't usually care for us crazy bikers! (As long as we don't take pictures or goof around a nice weed field!)

I live in Los Mochis, right at the entrance to Copper Canyon, I have some info at http://www.frc.com.mx/wordpress/?page_id=138 and here http://www.frc.com.mx/wordpress/?p=85 , http://www.frc.com.mx/wordpress/?p=85

Feel free to ask for anything, there are a couple of good guides at Creel.

I have an J&L Frame bag, and so far its ok, I changed the seat to a Ti Flite, so I guess I am at around 25-26 pounds with the 650b-2.3" Wheelset.

The bars are on-one Midges and the shifters are Ultegra 9 speed, I really like them and can shift and brake on the drops or on the hoods without a problem. I just adjusted the length of the stem until they felt right

Happy new year....

I have been using a sort of cross bike but running 40mm tires (on an old hybrid frame with drop bars), I am going to try 1.8 tires now (about 47 mm) I think that will be the sweet spot for me.

Its all a compromise, but since I connect singletrack with lots of fireroads and pavement it has worked great.

My Rawland DSogn on its first ride, 4 hours worth  thumbsup

To sum it up, The idea works, gravel, road, singletrack, you name it.

700cX40s for now, should be sweet with 650bX2.3.

I really envy you guys, that can just pinch a tarp, lay a groundsheet and go to sleep. Here bugs are so bad most of the year that its close to impossible (At least to a semi-city slicker  icon_biggrin).

But for me, the tarptent makes alot of sense. Are they freestanding?

People who digg fish tacos (like me) also dig La Paz.  thumbsup

Drop me a PM before you get there, I might get some singletrack info.

Hi Chrisx,

Baja its a big place, does have more that a single highway, and in its own way is more America like than a lot of Mexico. If the plan is southern baja (Baja Sur) remember that its 500+ Miles long with a couple of stretches of 100+ miles with out services.

Check advrider.com to find as much info as you would need, also Crazyguyonabike.com have several trips (But mostly road), I would recommend going in December over Jan. Better temps and a little less wind.

La Giganta is cool, a desolate place with some nice oasis, for me the nicest Baja is the coast from Santa Rosalia down to La Paz. I haven't seen nicer beaches and little secluded bays anywhere. Another cool place its the mountains in between La Paz and Cabo, you can go up them and are 7,000 feet with a nice diverse ecosystem.

Don't underestimate the desolation and size of the place, especially on a mountain bike and try to eat as much Lobster with rice and Beans as humanly possible.

Baja Sur is great, some of the backroads are sandy, but its incredible biodiverse, There is even a sierra roaming 7,000 feet (And you can rode up it).

There are several maps in the states, the best GPS map is from a guy from Guadalajara, he sell the SD's for something like 60 US. he advertise alot at advrider.com

Let me get you some info and links.
