My Jones has carried me a few miles, but now it's going to help me complete the repairs from the flooding that happened in Boulder, Colorado last year (pro tip: don't buy a house one month and get flooded the next).  The bike hasn't seen many miles (less than 1,000), has a minor chip or two (but has never been crashed; always stored inside; also, wasn't flooded).

Frame: Steel diamond frame, truss fork

Rear wheel:  Chris King hub (ISO disc) laced to a Rabbit Hole rim
Rear tires: Both a Maxxis Ardent 2.4 and a Schwalbe Big Ben 29x2.15 (so you can go mountain or city)
Front wheel:  Paul disc WHUB laced to a Marge Lite rim (and taped up for tubeless)
Front tires: Both a Nate (27tpi) and a Schwalbe Big Ben 26x2.35 (the Nate has been successfully set up tubeless on the front wheel - you can too!)

Achilles problems can also result from not having calves strong enough in the correct way to keep the load off the tendon. You want to load the calf muscles/tendon eccentrically, which you can do either with calf-descends off a stair, or riding a fixie. Running will aggravate any Achilles problems, and likely won't do much to prevent them.

I can't think of any couple combos outside the tandem contingent. I think in 2010 or 2011 there was an Italian couple that started together but dropped early (not sure.) Sounds like this is not your plan, but beyond the race ethics, I think it's risky to start these multi-day endurance races with the plan of traveling with someone else. The faster person is going to be worn down by traveling at the slower person's speed, and the slower person is likely to feel a level of tension or intimidation by the pacing alone. This is before you even throw in interpersonal issues.

Didn't Kurt and Caroline both ride (separately) in 2011? They're not married (so far as I know), but I'm pretty sure they were both out there.

Any more info on this (anyone? Bueller? Bueller?)? I'm planning a similar trip, running into the same issue.

Ohh man, I probably saw you then!  I rolled in about 1:40.  Long day, but could have been a LOT worse weather wise!  Glad you enjoyed the town.  They did a great job of organizing the race and post event activities.  Too bad the beer tent closes at midnight, haha.  I should have ridden faster!

Ha!  Yeah, weather was amazing.  I was super stoked about how gentle my first DK200 was on me.  Next year, faster...
