Good call. You'll enjoy your trip a lot more.

it's the fun factor, more daylight generally goes hand in hand with it. Good luck with planning. Fly home from Ak right before your late March thing. March is fantastic..

Hey Glenn,
I looked at your blog and your plans a bit.
Heading to Fairbanks around winter solstice is as dark and cold as it gets. You could do the white mountains loop and go cabin to cabin making for manageable 25 mile days. There is plenty of other river riding up there but expect it to be really f-in cold and dark.

The Denali highway (not the park rd.) might be good, and you might be able to ride some of the mushing trails around Denali park but don't know much about it.
Iditarod trail - It's not really "in" until the iron dog breaks the trail in Feb. You'll probably be able to ride to Finger lake, maybe Puntilla but forget about having trail after that.
Closer to Anchorage, the Knik is good overnighter, you could do the Kenai beach then ride the snowmachine trails near Homer, and of course there is tons of day riding around Anchorage.

Get platforms and warm boots. as nice as the 45nrt's look, they are unproven and you are talking about a long trip here during the coldest time of the year. Footwear is the most important piece of gear you'll have. Comfort and warmth are king.

as a side note... Pay the change fee's and come up Feb-April. It's the best time of winter!

lots of people have been using Neos for years in Alaska. I use wool felt boots inside and non-insulated Neos for the outers. Its a good setup that does not restrict circulation at all.

Hi Michael, I have a few ideas that would drop a lot of the highway sections on there. It would make the course 25 miles shorter though. But have an inspiring hike-a-bike.

Just a note, Colorado is a bit warmer than the OP's location in winter. Get a good winter rated pad and try what you mention. Adding the puff pants & down jacket helps a lot and is a heck of a lot cheaper than a nice -20 to -40 down bag.
Fleece pants are quite bulky and if you are only using them for sleeping it's a loose / loose for warmth, weight and compressibility.

Still have it. It's an older model, circa year 2000 but never had much use. It's 3 layer goretex and takes the plastic hoops. I don't think I have both hoops anymore but you could probably get them from OR.

Can't say. I had some friends that took the monthly Gulf Ferry last winter from PWS to Haines/ Juneau and they had perfect weather. But it's the gulf, you could get totally hosed.
I'm pretty sure it only runs once a month in the winter, I'd check the schedule...

Fly from Anchorage to Juneau, no easy way around it. But if you do that you might as well just fly to Seattle.

I have last year's Go lite RS-1 40 degree quilt. It's last years model, long version. Recycled insulation.
I modified it by sewing a light gore-tex to the bottom making it a full sack, but you can cut that out if you wanted.
It's in great condition, has only 10 nights in it.

$75 shipped. send a PM

i just can't believe it's not grown in. From what I've seen with roads like this the veg usually comes in thicker on the old roadbed than on the adjacent brush. maybe they spilled too much gas out there back in the day. great weather too. nice work.

Awesome route! I can now see why Paul has wanted to do this for years. Looks like a lot of decent riding for this kind of trip.
37  Forums / Classifieds / Schwabble 26" x 2.25" Marathon Extreme tires on: August 08, 2012, 11:32:48 AM
Selling 2 pairs of these, they have about 600 miles on them which is nothing if you know the tire. They still look pretty much new.
If you are going on a big bad dirt tour in the middle of nowhere this would be the go-to tire.
Was thinking $80 pair. They are no longer made by Schwabble in this size.
They work great on trails..

I'd love to keep them but don't have any 26" wheeled bikes.
Pm if interested.

Hey Chris,
Probably Joe Cruz,

as long as your feet clear that area you're probably fine.

40  Forums / DIY / Make Your Own Gear (MYOG) / Re: Do I need a special machine for sewing webbing? on: July 26, 2012, 06:04:57 PM
machine- bring the stuff to the store before you buy the machine and try it. Then you know before hand if it will work or not.

If you are careful you can top stitch your 4th side closed with both edges folded inwards, they will want to go that way since everything else is flipped already.
