Great for me it's a long ways from Madera  Canyon to Los Selvilla so I always need water there. I never have made it to CC in time for food at the Ranch. I have gotten water there from a sink by the restrooms but found it to be a pain plus it's out of the way.

Yeah it is a long way from Madera to Colossal Cave. I hit up the water fountain by the bathrooms at Whipple (off route), not thinking water was on at Madera, so I stopped twice just to top off. I had about 5L, which was alot climbing up on the road out of Madera, that's when I saw you Tim about 1/4 way up filtering.  I rode into La Sevilla in the dark and knew to look for a spigot in a Ramada. I also went down to the Ranch House and found that little sink by the bathrooms. Only thing down there was a dog barking at me, sort of waste of time and out of the way. Less than 30 minutes later you could be in La Sevilla.

There were some boy scouts camping out in La Sevilla and one of them I saw turning off the water spigot out of the rock, I lucked out.

As you roll onto the parking lot and before you get to the bathrooms, look to your right, that's where the Ramada cover (Shelter) is at and spigot faces the parking lot.

Hoping to be back on the AZT 300 soon, doesn't look like I'll make it for the start date, possible ITT this fall.

Awesome - I even have relatives to shuttle and pre/post lodging!

Great work, the Sierra's are beautiful.

Did AzTa do the 300 last month?

Been waiting a long time for this to be posted up since your blog post in March 2010 after you finished with your 92lb. bicycle in Nome.

Awesome!

I won't be going off with the starting group, but will head out onto the CTR on July 23rd with two other Texans.

Giving myself 10 days, more touring than racing, an adventure.

Anyone close to the trailhead where we could leave our car or close by and drop off us? Question answered.

Mr. Corfe - how goes it?

Heck, I just need to come back out and complete the 300 before "worrying" about another 500 miles in the FMD.

Great Photos and awesome trip shown through the pictures you took. Thanks for sharing.

Have to ask this though, was that Nutella and pineapple on a torilla? For some reason that sounds so awesome! I am going to try that on my next adventure.

Article reminds me of the Yuppie 911 thread earlier this year.

Using the Spot, I feel I even pay more attention to what I am doing and more responsible for my actions, my family and friends are the eye in the sky.

I am taking the exact same risk down the path wether I have one or not in any adventure. That only changes when it comes to the point in time of needed rescue.

I know one fella who finished the AZT 750 and the CTR this year without one.

Other than that, I don't do much different at all, given what little experience I have in Ultra events.

Seems to me one of the most useful benefits we have from them is being able to "Blue Dot Junky" an event and review tracks we've taken.

Mark Caminit called in from Copper Mountain waiting for Quiznos to open.

Sending on Cheers to Mark C. I rode with him for a few days during AZT this year. He just puts his head down and pedals. Go Mark!

When I was with Mark over on Tanque Verde, just to head a mile or so off course to the Circle K, he was swearing and cursing that he had to go that far to resupply. It was getting hot out and we had a long day ahead.  I can only imagine what he was saying on the 16-17 mile off course detour, but he did sound calm on that call in. Congrats Mark.

Keep rollin' Ian and Mark thumbsup and Congrats Tim!

Hey Layla - I saw Mark slathering on all kinds of strange smelling liquids while we were out there, Mark said it was his "secret" potion for just about everything and wouldn't say a word more.

Imo, any reasonably proficient mountain bike rider can aspire to race the AZT.  However like any of the self-supported multi-day mtb races, regardless of their particular mix of overall terrain, it very well may take a time or two to learn how to maximize your personal abilities.

Anyway, for a variety of reasons I think the AZT 300 provides a perfect introduction to self supported multi-day racing.  If it intrigues you-go for it.

This was my feeling in giving it a go this year Marshall. I learned more in doing it than I have the past few years following it along sitting here. I am back home now, somewhat proud of what I accomplished and overcame. I faced my fears head on, broke several personal records for evelation gain, distance, and hours in the saddle. Learned that my mental state can be supremely higher than my physical at times during the day and vis versa. Most importantly, in direct relation on maximizing your personal abilities, I also learned (lots of learning here) that my ability has increased to withstand physical and mental stress without failure and/or fatigue. Most of the race I was trying to prevent those small initial cracks that start to form within yourself that slowly grow until failure occurs.

In the end, two of the cracks became a concern (as well as my pace slowing) which were a large blister the size of a quarter on the heal of my right foot and a sharp pain on the right side of my stomach when I took deep breaths. These gave me caution into going down into Oracle and across the final 100 miles. I did not want to put myself into jeopardy consciously knowing of these issues and therefore stopped. I did not want to become "that guy" that needed emergency help out in the final stretch. I sort of thought back to the "Yuppie 911" thread.

I enjoyed riding and talking to both Mark and Tim alot. Tim knows the race extremely well and I fought off asking him a million questions. All of us had a great "race type pace" the final few miles over to the Molino Saddleback hike-a-bike up and over to Prison Camp as the sun was setting on Sunday night.  My write and pic's/video will be posted up in the next few days as I drop back down into civilization.

Thanks David, Jonesy and Scott/Jobie for the ride offers.

I'll be staying the night on Thursday night at the RV Voyager Inn off I-10 and Kolb Rd.

I would greatly apprecaite a ride, so count me in for a ride down on Friday morning (Jobie or Jonesy).
Give me a ring on Thursday (I sent a PM of my cell#) and I'll be waiting outside on Friday AM.

**OurManIntheNorth** I sent you a PM. If you can get to Phoenix, I can get you to Tucson.

I'll be in Tucson late Thursday afternoon, can anyone spare a lift either Thursday night or Friday AM down to the start? PM or post up. Thanks

I land in Phoenix on Thursday (4/22) at 1:35pm. I have a one way rental car rented to Tucson. I'll grab my gear, setup my bike, drop stuff off at a friends and then head down to Tuscon. Will probably stop and grab water/food at a local grocery store.

Just post up if this timing is close to yours and I'd be happy to shuttle someone else down to Tucson.
