1  Forums / Question and Answer / bike on Amtrak - tire width limits on: July 27, 2020, 10:36:40 AM
Hi, I'm writing to ask if anyone has experience bringing a mountain bike on Amtrak, or more specifically the California Zephyr.

The Amtrak FAQs say that the tire width limit is 2.0". My question is whether my 2.4" (front) or 2.2" (rear) tires could fit in the rack if I deflate them.

I plan to leave from Emeryville and get off at Grand Junction, Colorado, then ride to meet the GDMBR at Salida and head north.

I dropped by the station to ask my question today and the agent said he'd never seen a bike rejected for tire width reasons, but he also couldn't promise anything.

Thanks for any advice or experience!

Dear Kerry,
I'm so glad I found your post. I was on the fence about whether to pay for the membership. Thanks so much for sharing!

I think that as you get closer to the date you could ask for input, I live right on the route outside of whitefish and could give you an answer for right now but I guess that is subject to change as a month currently seems like an aeon. Right now my gut would be that a solo respectful cyclist would be just fine. Eureka mt for example never really acknowledged that anything was happening. Whitefish is inundated with tons of out of staters - as would be most tourist towns. A cyclist with their shit together is the least of anyones worries.

Thanks for your input! I'll definitely ask again as I get closer.
For others who are planning trips this summer, just wanted to let you know that the most active forum I've found is this one on Facebook. I know, it sucks that it's on FB.  Please let me know if you know of any other good sources of real-time info.

Hi, I'm planning to ride from Colorado north to Canada, starting in mid-July. Has anyone found a good source of updated information about which towns/parks/public lands along the way are closed and which are welcoming cyclists?  The best I've found so far is the facebook group linked below, which indicates that people have been embarking on the trip lately, but no details.

Hi, has anyone found a source of updated information about which towns are closed along the GDMBR and which are welcoming cyclists?  I'm planning to start in Colorado in July and head North to the border, or past the border if Canada opens up before then.

Thanks!

camnrtn,

Thanks so much for posting these pics. You've already inspired me to buy a used sewing machine and look in local thriftshops and craigslist for old backpacks.  I was wondering if you've modified your design for the made-from-scratch harness since your post, and whether you'd be willing to share more detailed pics/patterns for it.

Thanks!
