1  Forums / Trip Planning / Need a partner / Overnighter from Phoenix in February...Recommendations? on: January 06, 2019, 06:33:31 AM
Hi everyone! I’ll be in Phoenix in February and am planning on renting a bike and doing an overnighter (February 16-17). I’ve seen the Fool’s Loop route, but are there any others I might consider? Hoping not to rent a car, but to bike from the shop to the trailhead.

I just switched out the 36/24 chainrings for 34/22, which make the bike a much more capable trail/climber. I will include the 36/24 in the sale along with with two nice King Cage stainless water bottle cages.

Stock weight is 25 pounds. I have not weighed this one but it gains and loses some weight from the stock. The ultegra shifters are a little more stout, the 2x front adds, but the carbon seatpost and crank arms take some away. 25 to 27 is my educated guess. If I have a scale at work I can try to weight it,

I just got this as a slightly-used frame and drivetrain and built it up from there...it's in excellent condition and it's a real ripper. Great for gravel, trail and it's a bikepacking dream. Add a set of 29er wheels for it and take it touring. Bikes like the Sutra are very close to a quiver killer n=1 kind of bike, excellent for most of the riding most cyclists will ever do, especially if you like to mix road, gravel and singletrack together in the same ride. Steel frame and all the brazeons you could imagine needing, including two on each fork. Tons of tire clearance. Designed for off road drop bars like the Salsa Woodchippers. Powerful hyrdo brakes and a 2x11 drivetrain.

Size 52cm or medium (I am 5' 10"). Here is the build list:

Shimano Ultegra 2x11 drivetrain
Shimano R785 Brakes and Shifters
Shimano XT front derailleur
Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur
FSA SL-k Carbon Seat Post
FSA SL-k 38-28T 175mm Crankset (carbon cranks arms)
WTB i35 ASYM rims on Novatec hubs (15x100 front, 12x142 rear)
Nobby Nic 27.5x2.6" tires (will take true 2.8s at least) set up tubeless
Salsa Woodchipper Bars
SDG Circuit Seat

The tubeless setup is very good. There are three very small scratches in the frame finish on the seat tube which has been covered up by the official touch-up paint (the bottle of paint is included).

No pedals included. $1775 shipped in the US.

Those look great! What sewing machine are you using? Sometimes the older ones are better...

Nick,
Yeah, even the hybrid stuff can pull away at the seams. I am redoing my frame bag now because of this. It also has a very unique "patina" to it as it gets used, all wrinkly like a confused seersucker. Not everyone likes that. I am excited to try the vx fabrics....they have one that is a cotton canvas with their laminates on the back. Not light, though.

How do you help protect the seams so they don't pull out as easily?

Great to see another Fat Caad 2. I feel like we are the only two owners in the world. I have my manything cages attached with those steel clamps with bolts that King Cage makes...Not sure what would happen in a crash. Steel is stronger than aluminum but the clamps are petty thin. I thought about that same issue recently though when trying to figure out how to attach something to the downtube. Mabye one of those bags that just velcros on with extra straps and no mechanical hard linkage at all, as you are doing on your fork.

I make bags too and I like X-Pac...waterproof, the inside won't get that peely, flaky rot that the urethane coating on cordura will, and the extra rigidity is nice. I've used dyneema from Zpacks. I really like it, but it is very expensive. There is actually an even stronger version of that fabric, Hyperlite Mountain Gear uses it, for example, but I've never seen it for sale as a fabric. One reason I use X-PAC: DP is a great company and is very happy to work with small makers like me. Trying to get the Dyneema people to give me the time of day was difficult. I had to "apply" to be part of their program. Meanwhile DP sent me extensive samples and always responded to emails in a day.

The ultralight hiking companies seem to favor dyneema, silnylon, etc. Xpac does seem to be heavily used by the bike bag industry, but not just bikepacking. Messengers, etc.
10  Forums / Classifieds / FS: Bombtrack Beyond Plus medium, 27.5 steel bikepacking rig REDUCED! on: December 03, 2017, 04:12:58 PM
This 2017 Bombtrack Beyond Plus has been ridden less than five miles! I just got it as the ideal bikepacking rig and I hate to sell it, but some unexpected bills came up.

Bombtrack is a young German company designing excellent bikes with a bend towards adventure. The Bombtrack Beyond Plus gets excellent reviews in the bikepacking community. 27.5+ tires, steel frame, braze-ons galore, simple and reliable 1x11 sram drivetrain, very powerful Sram Level TL brakes. This is stock except for the tires, which are slightly used Maxxis Chronicles, my favorite tires for off road use! Set up tubeless. Boost spacing. Will come with lightweight fyxation pedals, also nearly-new.

Excellent condition. One little scratch on the seattube, a little wear to the fork ends (just paint). Otherwise it is ready for you to ride and add your own scars and war stories to it. This is a beautiful, kickin' bike and I hope it finds a good home.

Size medium. I am 5'10" and it fits perfectfly.

I also have a set of boost 29er wheels that fit it, novatec hubs with wtb i25 stp rims and wtb nano 40mm tires. This drop the bottom bracket about 1.5 cm or so. The rims would easily fit 2.1 or slightly larger tires for a 29er setup with next to no impact on bottom bracket. I will sell these for an additional $275 shipped.

Bike is $1700 shipped in the continental US. With extra wheelset, $1975

I know I am new here, but I have tons of good feedback on ebay (Mcdoogla).

(Note: seat shown is not stock. Buyer has choice between the wtb thinline or the stock bombtrack saddle, which is similar.)

Here's my Cannondale Fat Caad 2. I love it! Light, apocolypse-ready. I've ridden with with a few pairs of seasonal "shoes". Tried 27.5 plus, then 29plus, and of course the 26 fats native to the bike. Going to get a set of road 29ers and try life with just one bike...Here is it is with the 29 plus tires while bikepacking on the pine creek trail in Pennsylvania this summer. Spesh Burra Burra harness on front, PDW bindle and revelate dry bag on the seat post, home-sewn x-pac frame bag, and King Cage manythings on the forks. Jones bars.

Hi everyone! I'm Doug and I live in Oneonta, NY. I've been road biking and touring for a while, but am relatively new to bikepacking, though it feels like the homecoming I was always missing but never could put my finger on just quite what it was. I'm a stargazer, and I run a small science museum. Just taken a few short trips so far, but looking forward to doing more!

Right now I ride a Cannondale Fat Caad 2 with a bunch of different set of seasonal "shoes".
