Come join us for the second edition of Pinyons and Pines Bikepacking Race on October 10.

http://danaernst.com/PinyonsPines/

Pinyons and Pines is an underground self-supported bikepacking race that starts and ends in Flagstaff, AZ (6,910 feet). The route is a magnificent tour of Northern Arizona, utilizing a mixture of singletrack, double track, and dirt roads. The start and finish are at Flagstaff Bicycle Revolution, located at 3 South Mikes Pike, sandwiched between Pizzicletta and Mother Road Brewery. The course for 2020 is roughly 303 miles and consists of a Southern Portion (149 miles) and the Northern Portion (153 miles). The total elevation gain for the route is about 24,000 feet, split evenly between the two portions. The Southern Portion passes through Sedona (4,350 feet) prior to following a mixture of dirt roads and the Arizona Trail back to Flagstaff. The Northern Portion circumnavigates several extinct volcanoes, including the San Francisco Peaks, home to Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), the highest point in Arizona.

Riders can choose between two categories: solo or duo (2-person team). Please consult the rules prior to registering for the event. Feel free to ask questions on the event?s Facebook group (or post in the forum on bikepacking.net). Check out the event recap from last year?s race over on Bikepacking.com:

https://bikepacking.com/news/2019-pinyons-pines-event-recap/

Partly to satisfy some requests, but mostly to spread people out in light of the pandemic, there will be three options this year. GPX files for each option on the webpage.

- Pinyons and Pines: Full course! (303 miles)
- Pinyons Loop: Southern portion of P&P up to Schultz Pass and then Schultz Creek Trail and some FUTS urban trail back to start. (167 miles)
- Pines Loop: Start with a climb up Elden Lookout Road and then descend the newly constructed Heart Trail to join with the northern portion of P&P. (164 miles)

We will cap the total number of riders for all three options at 50. Riders will be required to wear masks and use hand sanitizer when resupplying.

There are currently about 40 people signed up and most are doing the full course and a few are opting for the Pines Loop.

I'm about halfway through.  Love it!  Thanks to the authors that contributed and Dave for putting it altogether.

If it happens to rain, is there any death mud we need to be aware of?

Just noticed that Cookie Mike, my favorite handle of this year, well...actually sells cookies!   icon_biggrin

I rode with Cookie Mike quite a bit last year.  He's a great dude!  SS again, too.

Some points of reference.

- Kurt made it to Silverton at 6:15pm two years ago.  This year he made it to Silverton at 4:45.
- Scott Sidener made it to Silverton at 10:30pm two years ago. This year he made it at 7:15pm.
- Two years ago, 8 people made it to Silverton before 10pm.  This year, about 20 people will have passed through by 10pm.

From Ian Torrence:

Yes, that vehicle will be fine on those roads on that route.  However, if there is a lot of rain right before or during their trek that will significantly negatively affect that drive. The mud out there is awful—especially on the 301 road (that's the worst of them all).  However, if it's dry, it'll be bouncy but easy drive.

Tim, since I've never driven those roads, I'm not sure.  But I will ask around and see what I can find out.

While not a bikepacking race, some of you might be interested in this event.

The 7th annual Flagstaff to Grand Canyon Stagecoach Line 100 Mile, 55K and Relays takes place just north of the Flagstaff, AZ and, runs the Arizona Trail to the Grand Canyon. New for 2019, we've added a 100-mile mountain bike option to our race line up on September 21st!

Entry fee covers 3 aid stations, copper buckle for finishers, event t-shirt, shuttle back to Flagstaff if needed. Event is fundraiser for Arizona Trail Association.

This mountain bike event begins a few miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, near the intersection of Snowbowl Road and Route 180, and finishes in Tusayan, Arizona, the entrance of Grand Canyon National Park. A majority of the Stagecoach course follows the Arizona Trail and the historic Flagstaff to Grand Canyon Stagecoach Line route used by adventure seeking tourists between 1897 and 1901. Many of today’s race-day aid stations are located at the original stage line rest stops and watering holes.

Course terrain varies between single-track, two-track, and maintained forest dirt roads. Bikers pass from heavily vegetated ponderosa pine and alpine aspen forests to sparsely vegetated pinion-juniper grasslands and back again. The 100-mile course starts near 7,300’, reaches a maximum elevation of 8,800’ (at Aspen Corner, mile 6), finishes at 6,600’ (Tusayan), and has approximately 7,000’ of climbing.

Bikers traverse over a shoulder of Arizona’s highest mountain, Humphrey’s Peak, through the high alpine meadows, across 422-square mile Babbitt Ranches, and along the Coconino Rim where views of the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert and Navajo Mountain await.

Flagstaff is situated along the western flank of the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the continental United States. The geologic centerpiece of Flagstaff is the San Francisco Peaks, home to Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), the highest point in Arizona. The Peaks have religious significance to several Native American tribes. In particular, the Peaks form the Diné (Navajo) sacred mountain of the west, called Dook’o’oosłííd, which means “the summit that never melts”. The Hopi name for the Peaks is Nuva’tukya’ovi, which translates to “place-of-snow-on-the-very-top”. Flagstaff’s climate and terrain coupled with easy access to vast networks of trails, make it one of the best mountain biking towns in the country.

FYI, I did a little backpacking in the area of Navajo Lake the weekend of June 29-30.  There were LOTS of trees down on Virgin River Rim Trail.  However, the trail had been recently been cleared east of the lake, so maybe all of it is cleared now.

Cool!  I just heard about this from Chris Kuzdas.  I was planning to do Bones to Blue on August 17, but due to a work conflict, I had to back out.  But maybe this will work!  And less driving!  Dave, how long do you think it'll take to ride the route if one rode straight through?  I need to be on campus Monday morning for the first day of classes.  It's likely more feasible for me to start on Friday, August 23.

I saw a picture of another racer from Arizona with a pay n take jersey on.  Anyone know who that is??

Brad, the PnT jerseys are worn by Joe Pavlik and Nathan Franklin. Neither are on Trackleaders.

It looks like Alexandera and Nico are holed up in Wamsutter.

From Lael's FB: "A momentary truce. Scenes from Brush Mountain Lodge and Clark, Colorado. Josh Kato, Chris Seistrup, Steve Halligan and Nate Ginzton have all been successful in getting over the pass and descending into Clark and Steamboat Springs. Rain, snow and mud soon after have made the road impassable. It’s 16 miles from the lodge to the peak and there’s word the other side of the pass is worse. This group made plans to set out at 3 a.m. this morning in hopes of better conditions, but awoke to snow. Hours later, it’s still snowing. In Clark, Josh Kato told us about looking for shelter near the top of the pass and finding a cave. He quickly kept trudging on when we spotted a cougar inside. This is a Tour Divide for the books."

I believe that he has a GPS but it bonked out on him.

I saw in a picture posted somewhere that SS had two different GPS devices mounted on his bars.
