Instead of this route I biked from Mount Vernon to Port Angeles testing my bags and setup.
I have to go back to Port Angeles and try "real" bikepacking. I have to lighten my bikepacking setup.

I will ride this soon. Unfortunately not with you. I could buy you beer.

I have a question about sleeping at Fairholm. Is there any option to have stealth camping? I mean free. :-) If you live in Port Angeles or Port Townsand lets meet for drink when I am there?

Good luck! I hope I will be able to see your trip report soon.

I am not able to join you, but like you I am also reading and making plan to do the route. This route you posted is spectacular and I hope you will complete it safely. For plans like this is good to have a car at the end of the route (in Bend).

In my case, I am kind of limited with transportation. I don't drive.
I have to always plan loop rides and use public transportation. It is a very difficult to find bike partner for harder trips and I will probably do route solo. My plan is to loop it and follow Scot's route he created. It is really something special!

http://salsacycles.com/culture/the_oregon_hot_sisters_route

I will take Amtrak train from Vancouver BC Canada to Eugene OR USA. This will put me in proximity to Oakridge OR, where I will enter the loop. I am not sure of dates, but I am aiming for September. Good thing of riding solo is I could always cancel my trip, if weather forecast is bad. I am not going to hurt anyone's feelings and feel bad.

Bad thing about riding solo is not really 100% fun. Things turn bad sometimes, and having a good, reliable friend is critical!

I wish you luck and your experience will help me a lot!
4  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Bike packing with a DSLR on: April 30, 2017, 08:44:35 AM
I've had a DSLR for a couple years now and only started bike packing recently so I'm not looking to switch cameras but I am asking if you guys think attaching my camera to my bike would be a bad idea.

My plan is to DIY a purpose built camera to attach to a rear rack on my bike. The pack will be water proof, padded and a snug fit. I will secure it tightly to the rack.

Any Questions, comments or concerns you guys can foresee?

I also would like to experiment carrying my older Canon DSLR. My plan is to keep camera on me, in front, on my chest using Ortlieb strap.

I already have bag: https://ortliebusa.com/product/aqua-zoom/
Strap is from Ortlieb and I have to buy it before my May trip: https://ortliebusa.com/product/camera-bag-harness-system/

I am not sure is it going to obstruct my breathing or increase sweating but I will try. It rains a lot here at Pacific West Coast and my camera will be protected. This experiment will be for mostly gravel, fire roads or logging roads trips.

Great bike route.
Since you were superlight you probably slept in Bed and Breakfasts and ate in small restaurants? Have you kept your expense sheet and what was your average expense per day? If you don'y mind to share.

I have this kit during my summer bike trips ...  Even tough West coast doesn't have bad snakes.

Interior British Columbia is different. We biked once through rattlesnakes country near Kelowna BC.

But it will be so hard to manage extraction if snake bit me in the back.
I mostly bike solo. I former Yugoslavia where I grew up, we had a very poisonous snakes dropping to mountaineer/hiker. I fear snakes will just slip from rock on me. When I was reading about AZT or Stagecoach 400 I was surprised people sleep in bivvy sacks. Brave man ... I would have a small tent but use bivvy up North for sure.

Several times I run into bears mountaineering here around Vancouver. They are not aggressive black bears. I just gave them space and all was fine. I was slow but major concern is to bike into one (around sharp corner etc.) I had few bells attached on my bike handlebar while biking Vancouver Island route last July. No bears seen ...

30 people entered the race last year, 15 finished and zero were ate by a animal.

It is unofficial and no one wants to talk about it, but is well known: 15 who finished were able to finish because they were chased by bears. Some of them were not ready for race, but bribed bears with some honey just to be chased and finish race. Cheaters!

Periodically I spent time on Ride With GPS searching for ideas. I wish we have depository of ideas in gpx form with interesting stops, wild camps or good brewery etc.

I am also old fashioned. :-)
I would like to see more trips here ... Bikepacking setups discussions. More about beer and pedaling or fly fishing and food joints. I like this forum and don't really want to spend more time on Facebook.

I bike in microfiber underwear from Costco. I also have one merino wool boxers from RAB. Both options are good. I don't use padded shorts on my Brooks Swift saddle.

Thank you.
I am not going this year but I am very interested to do it.
I have to plan it carefully and come home to Vancouver from St. George UT (at the end of the trip). Planning is always a challenge, but thanks to people like you (who share tips) gets easier.

Is there any option for someone who will fly to Tucson from Canada? And what option will be the most affordable.
