Just tried to find the video again, but vimeo has taken it down...  =(

Bummer about Chris having to drop out.  I know he made his gear choices for his reasons, and I'm not second guessing him, but I just have to wonder how that fully rigid setup may have taken a toll on his wrist.  Anyway - heal up fast man!  The trail will still be there next year.  Thanks for the inspiration!

Sounds like ultra-runners get it too...  Guessing it has something to do with electrolytes and osmotic pressure.  Basically edema in your lower extremities.  But biology was my worst subject...

Howdy folks!

Anybody have issues with swollen feet after a big ride?  I just finished a 3 day tour of the Colorado Trail through the San Juans and my feet are swollen up good.  No pain or anything - just unusual looking.  Figure it must be my body's way of trying to store some extra water for a future effort?

Cheers!  occasion14

FYI - appears to be a good resource for planning back-road adventures:

Awesome.  Thanks NT!  Looks like Rocky Fork is Trail 1931 and connects just downstream of Ruedi Reservoir, correct?  And I'm guessing that Miller Trail is Trail 1930 and connects just upstream of Ruedi?

Thanks again!  Threading the needle between wilderness areas!  Quite a detour to avoid Independence Pass...  Maybe I'll just use the standard Collegiate Peaks detour and pop out to 285...  C'est la Vie...
7  Forums / Routes / Colorado - 14er approaches by bike on: January 03, 2016, 08:26:30 AM
Howdy all,

Was wondering about the feasibility of bikepacking into some 14ers this summer.  Specifically some of the Sangre de Christo range - Crestones and Blanca group.  The South Colony Lakes road seems pretty do-able, I've driven that one before it was closed to vehicles and also hiked it since.  What I'm really wondering about is the Lake Como approach for the Blanca group.  Heard horror stories about this approach.  Would it be do-able by bike?  Would I just be better off backpacking it?  Hoping perhaps Justin can shed some light here?

Thanks!

Awesome!  Was planning to do the whole trail...  Looks like one could just head up Cottonwood Pass, then over Pearl Pass, then Independence Pass.  Or possibly detour through Basalt then over Hagerman Pass...  Any thoughts on linking up to Hagerman without the Basalt detour?

Roger that.  Just hoping to find a better route than heading out to hwy 285.  I guess the bright side is that 285 has nice wide shoulders!

Hmmm...  They must have some additional restrictions on the trail portions outside of the wilderness then...  That's a bummer. sad3

Thanks for the beta!

Has anybody asked the USFS whether their interpretation of the wilderness act would allow pushing a bike with pedals removed through a wilderness area?  Specifically, I'm thinking about the new Collegiate West portion of the Colorado Trail.  This alternate runs about 83 miles, only 5 of which is through the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.  I'd hate to carry my bike for 5 miles, but pushing doesn't seem so bad...

I know that some areas even consider a wheeled cart used for hauling out big game as 'mechanized transport'...  With that interpretation, if you have any gear on your bike still, it would fall under the same interpretation and not be allowed.  Planning to call and talk to a ranger, but thought I would ask here first.
