Going from St George to Las Vegas is easy.  There are many airport shuttle businesses in St George, as well as bike shops and hotels.  In 2014, I pedaled and hitch-hiked from AZT finish to St George, by way of Kanab, and found a shuttle company in St George that took me direct to LV airport the next morning.  Or course, you can take your time in Las Vegas and be a tourist and eat buffet... at the Bellagio perhaps?

Hey Maurizo,

No, you do not need a permit just to hike across, for this year, 2016.  You do need a permit if you plan to camp ANYWHERE in the canyon.  Many racers get a camping permit for Cottonwood campground, just in case.

As to your other question: yes, you can decide which route to take on the North Rim.  It is OK as far as the race is concerned, to take the paved road all the way to Jacob Lake.

Ciao Scott Thank you for thise information. Ciao from Italy

Just wanted to bring the following thread to the attention of 750ers and AZT fanatics in general:

http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/bikepacking/possible-changes-to-bike-access-in-grand-canyon-backcountry-plan-comments-need/

The extended day hike permit system is in some ways badly needed in the park (for safety), but it limits things, especially for 750 racers -- everyone hiking across the canyon will have to make a visit to the permit office, even if you aren't camping.  It's unclear what will happen if all the permits are gone and you are on a thru-trip.  The new plan does call for special consideration for AZT thru-hikers for camping, so perhaps that consideration would be included in extended day hike permits as well.  I will likely include a plea for that special consideration in my comments (I don't think they are going to be dissuaded of the idea of permits in general).

Anyway, give it a read and drop a comment if you've got the time.

Service note: the Desert Spoon cafe that is marked by a fork/knife symbol in Colossal Cave is permanently closed.  I've suggested they remove the sign.  It's been a favorite spot to grab an ice cream sandwich and maybe a burrito on tours or day rides in the past.  It's not too much of an issue for people racing as a lot of folks roll through during the dark, anyway.  But just in case anyone had their hearts set on it.

It's replaced by a new cafe that is quite tasty, but it's all the way up at the cave entrance, which is a hefty climb off route.  The pizza is good if you do make the climb.

hello Scott, I ask: it is now always obligatory to go in office for permit Gran Canyon, and if office is closed perhaps in the night? Thank you

Hello Scott. Excuse me but I do not read well English. I ask: it is possible to rid the road even if on the path not there is snow? decide I which covered to make? thanks ciao
13  Forums / Ultra Racing / Re: 2016 Arizona Trail Race AZTR planning thread on: February 27, 2016, 07:20:26 AM
Actually Ron Thomson and Bill Swami rode the trail in ... 2014 I believe.  Also on my first ITT of the "AZT" (Andrea's route) in 2005, I rode in the Fall and took the trail.

But, yes, de facto the road is always allowed.  Mega style points for taking the trail.  Most years snow makes it all but impossible.

If there are any other allowed snow detours, that will be announced in advance.  Thanks for the question.
