Still old school, but a couple of friends convinced me to take the Pugsley on a bikepacking trip and I had a BLAST! Setting it up for serious backcountry expeditionary cycling with front bar bag, 2 more cages on the fork, GPS bracket (for my Garmin eTrex 20), Cygolite Epilion 800 headlight and maybe, eventually Jones H-Loop handlebars. I think I have time for one, maybe two, more trips before the snow and buckshot start flying! Oh yeah, we gonna have some fun! Ride safe, Hans

I also rather like this set-up from Joff Summerfield of the UK, and his choice in headgear! Note the packs on the frame. Ride safe, Hans Joff is on his 2nd round-the-world tour and went right through my county and I missed a chance to meet him! Bummed!

" I wanna wear olive green, keep outhouses clean, shake hands with mother nature I wanna dig post holes, I wanna whip weeds, I wanna meet the public's needs. I wanna be a park ranger" 25 years and counting down to retirement from Minnesota State Parks. I'm also an EMS instructor and Christian Missionary to the Sioux Nation. I did retire from the in 2015 after 27 years, and am back working part time in Emergency Medical Services administration and training. Plenty of time for fishing, biking, bikefishing, taking the grandkids fishing and backcountry fishing on my Cogburn.

Back in 1997, I led a bikepacking missions trip to northwestern Russia. One of our team members was an Adventure Cycling/Bikecentennial life member, and she got me interested in the ACA. (She also left me her extensive collection of "Adventure Cycling" magazine when she passed away!) I have been a member ever since. I use their maps on the Lewis and Clark, Northern Tier, Northern Lakes and Adirondack Loop bicycle routes, and I read the magazine cover to cover, even in the off season. If you can join for free, do it! You'll keep coming back.

Old school: Pictures from when we started doing backcountry patrol on mountain bikes on the Chippewa National Forest in MN, in 2003. Volunteer backcountry ranger (me) with BoB trailer; Simpson Creek Trails, Inger, MN. We carried saws, axes and shovels on the BoB along with camping gear. Primary function was trail maintenance, visitor assistance and education, and first aid. (And yes, there is a collapsible fishing rod on top of the BoB bag.) Panniers, Trout Lake Primitive, Non-Motorized Area and Historic Site, Marcell, MN. (Patrol partner was using the BoB.) Backcountry patrol campsite, Trout Lake Primitive Area, July, 2004 We still do backcountry patrol; it's in our name. Primarily on the Chequamegon National Forest in WI. They do let us stay in the regular campground now. Hans Erdman, WEMC-I Patrol Director/NMBP Instructor #03 Backcountry Trail Patrol Association, Inc. Isanti, MN www.trailpatrol.org

"He", in other words, me. (Don't you just hate being referred to in the third person, when you are sitting here reading this stuff?) Yes, that was where I saw them, in "Ride the Divide". Nothing wrong with asking...I thought it was a brand-name. And yes, I am familiar with the Buffalo Soldiers, the bike trip in 1897, and also how they helped save many lives in the massive wildfires of 1910 in Montana and Idaho. "Iron Riders" and "The Big Burn" are both on my bookshelves...and I have read both of them.

Does anybody know where to find "Buffalo Soldier" brand frame packs? I have tried web searches without any luck. Did the company go out of business?

Karelia, Russia, 1997 (My interpreter, whom I call "my Russian daughter", and my daughter, 40 km south of Petrozavodsk.): ACA Lewis and Clark Bicycle Trail, near Greenwood, SD, 2012: ACA Lewis and Clark Bicycle Trail, near Greenwood, SD, 2 hours earlier: " This immense river waters one of the fairest portions of the globe. Nor do I believe that there is in the universe a similar extent of country. As we passed on, it seemed as if those scenes of visionary enchantment would never have an end." Meriwether Lewis.
