Hi Folks,
hupps I might should had have told some more background details (I am into longdistance cycling for over 20 years, coming from the racing HPV-scene to Brevets (PBP) and entered the SelfSupportRacing-MTB-Thing in 2008 ..) So for sure I am a TD-rookie, but not a Biwak-Bike-Rookie. Therefore my focus of questions is pretty much on the TD-Route and all the factors interacting and make your day mileage in- or decrease.
You make it to the finish-line first in your mind ... rolling your bike physically over the finish-line is "just" second. Therefor one need/must (sorry for my bad spelling/grammar ... spent the time on bike and off school in the early schooldays...) to cut the "whole thing" into mentally manageable pieces. This is pretty easy for races lasting only one day/24 ... But once the distance implements "continuing next morning/day" things changing dramatically. So I always start the mental preparation by a piece-sheet. This sheet will be modified till it suits to my abilities and to the race itself. If it is not fitting to both of these aspects, I would never even start the race ... Nevertheless, this timetable is just a tool to make sure not to waste time and not the waste energy by putting in to much effort to early in the progress. In the past I have learned, I am not winning the ride in the first days, but I may loose it because off going to fast/inefficient in the beginning. For Example: Due to my SRM-files I was getting better every day during this years Grenzsteintrophy, because I started relaxed in "trainings-pace" (low watts, but long time) and ended up (higher watts some amount of time).
However, this sheet was the first "scribble" to be modified in the next weeks. Next steps are: a) adding all pass/climbs b) adding all "mud"-risk-passages c) adding all "hike/snow"-risk-passages d) adding all "wind might be a factor"-passages e) adding the opening ours of the resupply f) after that I will higher/lower the approx. mileage of every stage g) compare this plan with former 24-days-TD-finisher
This sheet helps to check if my progress brings me in time to the airplane. I have 2,5 "spare days" before my flight departures ... so I do not worry or getting stressed if reality is different to my plan ... btw. that is what these rides are made for, aren´t?

Hi folks, we are working on the 2013 route ... in oppesite to TD, the GST has no proven route a basic layer ... every meter is scouted by volontary cyclists ... we do changes every year ... some to the better, some to the worser ... it depends to the point of view. 2012 GST with the easiest GST by Walking/Climbing, 2010 was the hardest I guess ... however to give you an impression where it goes: Here you find the scouting corridor of the route: http://www.grenzsteintrophy.de/files/2011/08/GST_2012_Korridor.gpx_.zipThe 2013 file will be finished at least 8 weeks before the GST starts. Starting date is 17th of June 8.am. at Priwal Beach next to Lübeck ... nearst int. Airport is Hamburg! Just drop mails, if you have got questions! Cheers M-M

Hi Folks,
I just started the route preparation and have got a few Q, may someone got some helpful links/hints:
- Does someone got the GPS-Data of the snow detours of TD 2011 and 2012? - Which GPS Map to be run on a Garmin etrex30 suggested to be the best? - Is any free/open map available?
Thanks for answers in advance! Happy Miles-Eating!

Hi,
the Google-Doc only lists SoBo-Riders, and they are only 7 all together ... well, there are rumors about a second start date due to the overcrowded Grand Depart ... where to get details? Tourdivide.org does not answer.
For Biz-reasons I have to start earlier: So is anyone interested in starting 7th of June at Banff?
Cheers

Hi Kurt,
you are right: Why do rankings for "unrankable" performance? Everybody who is pushing himself out of his personal comfort zone is some kind of a hero. Basicly one can not rank anything else but time. The effort, the suffering, the challenge and so on, one can not compare, judge, rank ... i

Forums / Ultra Racing / TDR 2012 budget
|

Hi folks, I do not agree with the statement, that the TD is an expansive race!
It it a three week plus ... adventure-trip, great nature, great people ... the memories will last the whole life ... good investment! One can stole your bike, burn down your house, but no one can enter your brain and kick out the memories of your TD-ride ...
For most of us it is a "once in a lifetime"-ride ... ok, one thinks it is a oialt, but it may turn out to be a once in a year thing ... However, I would sell most of my bikes for getting the 5.000 Euro to make it over to Banff, but one can not buy the four weeks of time to ride the TD. So I continue to dream about it, get my gear ready and do some bike packing out my back door ...
To me it is not a money thing to hit the start ... hey and European must add the interconti-flight to the budget ...

Dear Sherpaxc, yes, that seems to be the point: In the end, most bivysacks seems to be like old bike panniers in the pre-Ortlieb-times : "some kind of water resistant, but never water proof", so why should one buy an expensive/fancy one? An other point is: Only some of the webpages of the companies are mentioning if the Bivysack will contain the sleeping pad inside ... Does anyone has got the necessary size in inch/cm to compare? So here is the result of my investigation so far: - The most light: MLD SUPERLIGHT BIVY (Neo Air compatibel) 156 g http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=30Titanium Goat Ptarmigan Bivy 165 g http://www.trailblaze-trekking.com/titanium-goat-ptarmigan-bivy.htmlmontbell B-DRTC.U.L.
