. Also, as you get better at sewing (that's not a comment on your sewing... it's a general statement), you can often do seams without aid that you couldn't do at the beginning.

In any case, quite an interesting bag. Well done.

Exactly, with practice comes speed and skill, you will soon find out its easier and quicker without any aids.

yeah, i see now. thanks for the tip. i have been using 1" so far, seemed like wider is easier without attachment. might go to 3/4" as well now.

nice, is it compatible with any width of grosgrain? i have become pretty good with grosgrain now even at curves but this would make the whole thing go faster i assume.

-i am wandering what type of zipper i should use. not in term of size, even though i am still deciding between #3 and #5. i wander if uretek coated water repellent zippers are what is normally used or just standard zippers. i searched backpacking light, some people dont recommend uretek zippers. any advice?
-also not sure weather or not catenary curves are needed for perimeter edges. i know i need them for ridges. this is going to be pyramid type shelter.

yeah that might do the trick, i just have problem on curved surfaces, straight lines i can do just fine but the tight cure on seat bag nose for example is my worst nightmare Smiley

The process is both fun and frustrating. I learned a lot on the first bag and can't wait for round 2.

exactly, takes a lot of practice, my biggest problem still is finishing inside with grosgrain. no matter what it keeps twisting and bunching on me.

made half frame bag for my road bike using shock cord method. i think this is much better attachment design than velcro. i would say it will work great for mtb too. i am making another bag for my fatty and will use this method. the problem with velcro is also that it wears the finish on your frame.

thanks,
my first bag ended up twisting as well, now i am ready for new one. i as well tried mesh pocket and will not be doing it again. i will be reinforcing middle panel with 1/8" foam this time and possibly using stretch cord for attachment to top tube instead of velcro. i might try to use mounting points for bottle on down and seat tubes as well, just to eliminate as much velcro as possible.

i took my current project (gas tank) little further and lined it with different color fabric. i sew everything inside out with 1/2" allowance. now to finish raw edges i used grosgrain. what i am not sure is how to finish corner where 3 fabrics meet, like the front of the tank where top xpac meets side xpac panel and bottom cordura panel? or is there another way to do this?
39  Forums / DIY / Make Your Own Gear (MYOG) / Re: first seat bag on: September 25, 2014, 11:19:19 AM
well i should have said, my machine doesnt like that fabric since my wife used it Cheesy, she was sewing some quilts and messed my tensions, and now i cant find correct adjustment for the fabric anymore.
40  Forums / DIY / Make Your Own Gear (MYOG) / Re: first seat bag on: September 25, 2014, 11:02:47 AM
cordura is 1000, packloth is 400, xpac is terrain, i think i am using #16 or 18 needle, will have to double check, the recommendation for the thread was 14-18 if i remember correctly.
thanks for the tip.
