I don't know if anybody knows about this but this event has been held twice now, last year and this year. Officially not called a race for legal reasons here in Germany, but it is. It runs along the former inner German border, where east meet west. The " Iron curtan". The rules are the same as other self supported events. So for all of us in Europe there is a SS event not too far away.

The length is 793,75 miles and has 55,760 ft of vert.

A nice article is in there about Dave B. and the dangers we all face by doing these things.

A video of part of the course: http://www.youtube.com/user/waltraudS#p/u/12/xNUcUxI4pIg

Some looked pretty loaded down. Even a Pug or two in there!

Ciao!

Interesting, looks like you might need a weed wacker and huge fat tires

You going to do it Phil?

I've thought about doing it. I could drive to the start. It would be kind of neat to ride along the former border, going past old guard towers. You wouldn't want to go off route for fear of hitting a mine that was forgoten.  icon_biggrin

Wouldn't need bear spray, maybe a machete though for the weeds.

Flatfishy,

there is no entry fee, no support, no transport to or from the start/finish. I don't know which way they'll go next year, it doesn't say on the website. You could send Gunnar an email info@grenzsteintrophy.de The rules are basically the same as other SS races in the states. You have to do the route on your own, no help, your own muscle power. No preplanned arrangements with hotels but you can send packages to a post office to yourself. Pretty straight forward.
The length is 1270 km , approx. 17000 vert. of climbing.

Thats a good question, I think there is a gps track. I would send an email to the address that I mentioned in the last post. Put all of your questions in there, I'm sure that you'll get the info. As far as the route goes; it's the western border of the German States: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen and Sachsen. See herehttp://german.about.com/library/blbundesl_de2.htm
I'm not with the organisation so all the info I'm giving you is what I've read off the website. I hope that I was able to help.

Cheers!
