Read Kent's blog about his recent endo over a barbed wire cattle crossing ... Seems the mountain turtle went airborne and landed on his shell -- glad to report he and bike are fine. Just another day on the Great Divide ...

I was looking at the pictures on the tourdivide.org site. Especially this one:  Is that an Alfine IGH? Sure looks like one. That would be the best test of it's reliability. |

Yes it is. Interestingly, he's running the shift cable along the top tube and down the seatstay to the cassette joint (little doodad where shift cable connects to hub for shifting) tucked behind the chainstay. He must have the cassette joint slightly angled up to have it behind the chainstay (as opposed to slightly angled down where it could snag something and break).
It's an interesting choice and as you said earlier, this will be a good test of reliability. Alfine and nexus hubs have been used on mountain bikes in various configurations (even though they are officially not designed for it but seem to be very capable of handling the job).
If the gear range proves to be adequate, this hub would seem like a good choice if it is durable enough. Aside from a catastrophic failure which would likely end someone's tour or would be as complicated to replace as a blown drivetrain/hub/etc., there are few places where the hub can break. The cog and cassette joint could break but both items are easy to carry and weigh very little (easier than carrying a rear derailleur and cassette). The advantage of not having a moving chain and derailleur and the cleaning ease in muddy conditions would seem like good compromises for some limits in the gear range.
Now, with the 11 speed, oil bath Alfine on the way, this could open up some real possibilities.
P.S. the usual argument of hub inefficiency is, IMHO a bit of a red herring in this setting because who actually has a clean and optimally efficient drivetrain when off-road touring for multiple days?

So Erik lives in Steamboat Springs, elev 6700'; will he have an advantage over Blaine and Matthew in the high country of CO? Now that he's caught up Blaine, and within 60 miles of Matthew, this is getting interesting again!

About hub efficiency... Not to get off topic, but not long ago I rode hard for a few days on a new 3-speed ti Brompton folder (or maybe it was a 2x3). The losses in any gear but the direct-drive were depressing -- when going hard on pavement. I didn't notice it when just cruising. I suppose it was Sturmey-Archer? I'd been hoping to be impressed by hot new efficiency. It was dandy, just not for high-performance. The old ones were good for easy stuff. This new one seemed good for medium.

I believe I read that Dave Blumenthal is on a Rohloff, true? Anybody else this year on an internal geared hub? (sorry if this has been covered already)
Derek Richert, Dave Preston, and Brad Perry all lost time this week going into Jackson, probably to deal with mechanical problems. It would be interesting to know what they were fixing.

I think what we see in the split chart for Erik and Blaine at Steamboat is due to the location of the split point. Blaine's spot was in the Steamboat vicinity and parked for a couple of hours while Erik was still inbound last night. This morning, if current spot locations are to believed, the spread between the two is about what it has been with Blaine again in front. Erik might also be holding back to get his bike into the shop to forestall the dreaded unicycle "fix" - when so many parts have fallen off or been destroyed along the route that only one wheel is left viable. |

I'm curious, to what degree do those who have ridden the TD coming from lower elevations notice the air? I just moved away from Boulder after 4 years and when there, I found I only really started to feel the elevation at 9K'+. A local brevet organizer advertised a ride that started outside of Boulder (~5400') and headed into Kansas as lowlander-friendly. Now that I'm hooked on the TD and have to start planning for it, I'm wondering whether I need to plan in several weeks at altitude first! |
