Are you guys splitting the AZT 750 tracks into several 10,000 point sections or simplifying the whole track into a single 10,000 point section?

Depends on what GPS you are running.

I'm using an etrex 20 and will split

Using the etrex 30...  If you don't mind me asking why are you splitting over simplifying?

Newer GPSes can hold tracks of 10,000 points. Older units can hold 10,000 points too, but not in a single track--so people usually split the track into 20 tracks of 500 points each (10,000 total). In the end, both have exactly the same detail, and work equally well.

Ahhh, I had myself thinking that the etrex 30 could hold 200 tracks of 10,000 points each... Seems that's not the case... Looks like I'll just have to simplify the 53,191 points into a single 10,000 point track and call it good...

Sounds good. 10,000 points should give you excellent resolution over that distance. I haven't done the AZT 750, but 10,000 points makes for an extremely detailed track on the CTR.

Hmmm, I've tried several times to transfer the tracks to my etrex 30... Topofusion says transfer complete but I have no tracks anywhere on my gps... I've tried it as a single 10,000 point track as well as split into 20 500 point tracks as well...  Any ideas?

Have you tried zooming in on the specific areas of the map that should show the tracks?

Maybe try uploading with Garmin Mapsource?

I'm not sure how/if I can transfer the track to map source after it has been resized to 10.000 points..

Save it out of Topofusion as a GPX. Open the GPX in Mapsource, and then upload to the GPS.

Sorry for the delayed reply. As per above - It can! The Big HuRT in Aus was about 50,000 trackpoints and i split it up into 5 files of 10,000 each and the etrex 20 was happy.

That's a whole lot of waypoints. So I'll be splitting the AZTR into 6 files of 10,000 each to fit in the 53,000 odd waypoints for the full 750miles.

Thinking from an accuracy standpoint - 53,000 trackpoints across 1200 kms gives a trackpoint every 22 meters
If you simply to 10,000 trackpoints over 1200 kms, that's a trackpoint every 110 meters. (apologies for metric, that's how our brains work on this side of the pond)

If you are looking for a sneaky turn while exhausted in the middle of the night, I'd rather have the extra accuracy of more waypoints

That's my logic anyway.

I don't have an eTrex 20, but I read the spec page (which isn't very clear) to mean that the device can hold 10,000 total points, across 1-20 tracks. Very cool that you've found that it can load 20X10,000 points. That's a whole lot of points! Thanks for the clarification.

Awesome!  I just split the track into 10,000 point sections and Topo Fusion worked great and split it into track sections 0 thru 5 and uploaded it straight to my Etrex 30... One thing I did notice was that it had loaded a separate AZTR track as well... The entire track was automatically showing up on my map but I decided to play around and delete the separate AZTR track to see what would happen... The whole track disappeared from my map and I had to go to the track manager, click on each track section and tell it to show on map... Not sure why you would want to but this way you can only show what sections of the track you want showing on your map...

Very handy if a loop crosses back over itself somewhere and you're struggling to figure out which one of the mess of lines on the screen you should be riding on now. Turn off the bits you've already ridden and it might clear things up.

I suspect the full 750 mile track you could see on screen would be the simplified file that you loaded via mapsource earlier.

Makes sense about the trail crossing itself... All kinds of things get confusing when your sleep deprived!  I deleted the simplified file before adding the split files?  Who knows, maybe it didn't delete or something?
