Bad news. Word is that Josh Shifferly took a bad spill on the downhill coming into Helena and won't be able to continue. We have arranged transportation back to Colorado. He said he is banged up but nothing broken. Josh was keeping a strong pace and it's a bummer to see this kind of thing happen--good luck on the recovery Josh.
Damn, that sucks.

This blows. He has been training hard for this.

Has there been anything 'official' about Eric Lobeck being sidelined or is it just rumored at this point?

Corrected - sorry for the confusion !!
The confusion is also that the video and reference to 5-way intersection is at Stemple Pass proper.  The route DOES NOT go over Stemple Pass, it goes right at FR4143 couple miles before Stemple.  It's the turn onto FR4143, when going Southbound, that every year (except last year's re-route around this area) seems catch a few people asleep at the handlebars.  There's nothing special about the turn other than it could be called subtle, or quiet, and like Pivvay said, a rider may be tired, not paying attention, riding in early morning light or late evening, etc, etc.  Despite the clear map and cues, or "follow the red line" simplicity of GPS, this turn at Poorman Ck has a Bermuda Triangle effect that "gets" some riders like we've already seen this year, and with occasional confusion that dates back to the 2009 TDR.  All it takes is for one person to miss the turn and lay down a tire track for other tired minds to follow the wrong way.

Not sure, but he's been sitting in the same place for 28 hrs.  If he continued I'd bet it'd be a fast tour philosophy at that point given the goal he had.

Sucks about Shifferly.  Goes to show first place is never safe on that route.  Could have been anybody from 1st to last I'm sure.

As for Eric Foster - having dislocated my shoulder 3 times before having surgery to correct it I cannot imagine the mental strength it would take to relocate ANY joint at 23, out in the wilderness, likely wet and cold, by myself, with no real drugs to help.  Then to ride 80 miles... borderline crazy.  I'm curious if he has had this issue in the past and knew what to do or just dealt with it on the fly.  Regardless he deserves some kudos.

I'd say that until a rider shows up in the Scratched category on Trackleaders, then it's not official.

Really sucks. Thought this was his year, even after having to stay in Eureka. Of course anytime he enters he lines up at a TD start he's going to be considered a favorite, if not the person to beat.
Erik was in such a good mood when we ran into him yesterday around noon. He was cracking me and Erin up. Good times.

Leaders should be down or at least going down Fleecer Ridge now, onto Wise River for a feed, then a tarmac cruise into the night along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway. Maybe more food at the Hot Spings, time for a soak even??

Got some [/url=http://mtbcast.com/site2/category/td12/calls[/url] posted:

Robin Borstmayer called in from Lincoln. He’s sore but pushing on!

Tim Zawislak called in from Lincoln. He’s having Spot issues but he’s riding with Robin Borstmayer.

Jo Ann Burtard called in from Whitefish. Everything is going well but the call did get cut off.

Paul Gadola called in from home. He’s been out for a couple of days. He’s back home but has a touch of pneumonia! He’s notes he’s the one with the snow tire on front, you may have seen on the Bikepacking forum.

Michael Intrabartola called in from Lincoln where he’s stopping for today with a sore knee.

Josh Shifferly called in from Helena. He took a spill and is scraped up but okay. His bike, however, is done so he’s pulling out.

Georg Deck called in from Lincoln. Where he’s calling it a day.

Tracey Petervary called in presumably to continue a call from Lincoln. Perhaps another call gut cut off. This cuts off but she sounds like she’s doing well.

Hell ya Missoula!
It dosen't surprise me. Adam's one of the toughest guys around. Pretty much the only person in town he can't drop in the mountains is Sam Schultz.
He's also been out on this section in the last 6 weeks. So, he knows the climbs well.

Get that soak in! I was down at Elkhorn on Sunday (in between trail digging fests on Richmond Peak). One of my favorite spots in MT.

Race time 9pm: These are moments that I like to watch who makes late evening and night time pushes over big climbs.  How far will Goldberg and Borstmayer go towards Helena?  Any of the riders already in Helena or arriving later keep going?  Will Jarral Ryter and Ryan Correy make it over Lava Mtn in the dark?  I'm assuming Eric S is already over the top since his current spot is over 2 hours old.  There's not much in Basin and the one bar closes early, so how many make the effort to get all the way to Butte?  Will the leaders push on up the long pavement stretch after Wise River and how far?  These are the type of "swing" moments and decisions that translate to 1/2-days and full days being shaved from, or added to, finish times in the end.

I have an update on Josh Shifferly. He has received a big outpouring of support and may be able to keep going. Wednesday he will see if he can get his bike fixed--apparently the rear wheel was taco'd and is not rideable--and if he is fit to keep going. So it may not be over for Josh after all.

Anybody know what the deal is with Brian Grimm?  He went off course from Sparwood and headed down to Fernie, then backtracked and got back on course but then turned around again and went back down to Fernie and on to the border using the wrong valley.  He's still going though!

Thanks to everyone for posting the pictures and the stories of TD's in the past and thoughts about this years.  Our son is riding, Tyson Fahrenbruck, a rookie out of Boise, Idaho.  It is so exciting to be able to follow him on the map.  Cheering for everyone though.  Sounds like a great ride, even with the weather and the bears   Best of luck to all and go Ollie go!!! And Tyson and Michael Cleveland!!

Agreed, Mike.
Looks like Ollie and Craig made the turn and are heading up the Pioneer Scenic Byway. Wondering where they'll pull over tonight. Its 30ish miles to Elkhorn. Prob and additional 4ish to the Grasshopper.

Adam should catch Serge and Kurt in Butte. It'll be interesting to see if any of them push on.

Looks like the rain is about to come down on everyone from Ovando to Helena.
