World Cycle Racing

In case anyone missed this. On the 18th February 2012, Ten riders set off from London to race 18,000 miles around the world in what has been described as ‘Arguably the Longest, toughest, adventure race in the world’. With the goal of winning the race and hopefully claiming the ultimate prize of a new Guinness World Record.

Currently the fastest circumnavigation by bicycle is 96 days, 10 hours and 33 minutes, and was achieved by Alan Bate (UK) who cycled a distance of 29,467.91 km (18,310.47 mi) and travelled over 42,608.76 km (26,475.8 mi) in total (including transfers).

I've been a little hoked on little track leader blue dots since the 18th. There is a long way to go and everyone is taking a different route and while the race is still anybodies there are some early leaders appearing with back to back 250 mile days.

How do you raise enough money for such an endeavor?? These guys are taking all kinds of flights, ferries, buses...shipping equipment I'm sure. I wonder what it costs to tackle such a thing.

But man, how awesome...what a way to see the world. Brave indeed to ride clear across India!!

These guys have no support but the current record holder was supported for about half the trip. As for funding, its a good sponsorship opportunity but will take a lot of money. A previous record holder, Von Cox, spent about £20,000 ($30,000).

We've added 4 more routes, and also adjusted distances traveled to take out ferry rides.

This is an exciting race to watch.  We're stoked to be tracking it.

Mike Hall is on an epic push right now...I don't see any significant stops since yesterday morning. I noticed he finished 10th in the TD last year.

He looks to be riding through some beautiful country (from what I can tell). I have to say that his route seems the best. Guy up in Ukraine must be chilly!

Can't wait to see some pics of the guys in India - dodging cows and rickshaws and dudes pushing tables on wheels loaded with vegetables right down the middle of the street!

Mike is a bit of a monster! He was up with the leaders on the TD last year for a week or so, then got injured and dropped back.

Yeah, Mike is killing it... his ratio of moving to stopped time (per SPOT) is very impressive... though that number is a little coarse with SPOT data.  It seems like he is riding closer to TD pace (albeit paved).... but this event is much, much longer than TD.  Can't wait to see if he can keep it up.

Wish some of the others would track more often so we had a better picture of how far they have cycled.

Looks like Mike H. is going to cross the Isthmus into Istanbul instead of taking his southerly track. I wonder what changed his mind...I know they don't have to stick to any route - just about getting the miles. Maybe he's just enjoying Greece...

Can't imagine riding a bike through Istanbul - hope he has some good maps!

Some great performances.  A guy called Niel Coventry-Brown started from near Nelson NZ on 29th February.

Jason Woodhouse had problems and has returned to London.  He is intending to return to where he left the course in France and continue, probably next Wednesday.

Thanks for the pics from the start. Good to see the setups. Mike H's setup looks tight! Love the dashboard shot...that is a lot of electronics on one bike - any reason why he has two cyclocomputers? One a backup? Or does he display different data on both instead of having to scroll through on one?

I stand corrected on my earlier statement...as he is now heading back to his original track.

Woodland - I assume the second computer is a back-up though I didn't ask him.  The three set-ups that looked right were Mike's, Martin Walkers's and Sean Conway's.

Mike has now surpassed 4,000km in 2 weeks!

That second cyclometer is a backup for sure.

I like Mike's bike setup. He's opted for the disc brake and carbon route. He's using an On-one dirty disco carbon frame and has gone for Reynolds Assault Carbon Disc wheels with a mostly Ultegra group.
