Please forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand why (I've seen this multiple times now) the organizers of such events make the declaration that a particular event is not a race.... although the elements of race are there:

1.  There are rules and organization
2.  The participant announces that they will participate
3.  The start and finish times are logged
4.  The riding of the route may be required to be satellite tracked
5.  A "Time Trial" is a type of race.

So why aren't  these things called races?

Granted, the only prizes are bragging rights, but first place, is first place, no?

possible attempts at insulation from liability, permitting, insurance and/or civil litigation from participants/family.

I like the term, "Fastest Known Time(s)" myself.

If these were organized and sanctioned races, I'd most likely not be interested in them. They do attract a certain individual.

I've helped organize a non-race "race".  The amount of money/organizing/insurance it would have taken to get approved was way over the top.  Instead, we just posted a route and had people post up their finishing times at the end.  Casual, free (for the racers), and is as competitive as you want to make it, or not at all.  Good times for sure.

It's an attempt to have it both ways.  No liability or legal requirements if it's not a "race", but the organizers still require you to follow a set of rules to be considered a finisher.

Forgive my snide response, but I'm thinking it's called the "Tour Divide 'Race'".

Actually, the organizers just call it Tour Divide.
