If they do, it will most likely be a few years away, as trickle down technology does just that trickle

I'll look forward to this cassette.  Had to work through a few issues with the Actiontec Ti 36t on one of my bikes this week.  Got it sorted in the end, but it'd be great to see deraileurs and cassettes designed around 36.  Thanks for the post.  Any idea on release date?

ScottM, I think I remember you saying somewhere you're running 20/36 on two different bikes? I've been meaning to ask you what derailleurs you've been using and if you have had to do any tricks to keep the top pulley from rubbing against the big cog, like shortening the chain or putting in a longer "B" tension screw? (The screw that pushes against the der. hanger on the frame).

Also, what frame(s) are you using them on, because not all der. hangers have the flat spot in the same location, relative to the mounting hole. Thanks

I'm running a 36 on 2 bikes, yep -- Lenz Leviathan and Lenz Behemoth.

Have used X5, X7 (med cage) and X9 (short cage) ders successfully.  Haven't had to change B-tension screws or anything.  In fact, all those ders can get the top pulley too far from the 36 cog.  That was part of my most recent problem -- I had it too far from the cog resulting in some skipping under high load.

I run a 34t cassette behind it, but had to switch to a 32t on the Behemoth for some reason.  The chain was just barely making contact with the teeth on the 34, resulting in some noise and occasional issues with slipping.  Strangely I've used a different (SRAM) 34t on the Leviathan without that issue.  I'm guessing the 34t I had to replace was worn enough to make it an issue.  It may start happening on the Lev too.

I called the Shimano Rep, he said that it looks like it's probably going to be available to Europe only(he thinks), but he let me put one on backorder.

He said that they are scheduled to be ready in June, but it might take longer.

If it's true that it'll be a Europe only part I guess us in the States can order it from Chain Reaction Cycles.

Cool.  Please let us know if you get one (or know how to order one).

Thx.

Hmmm, I guess it depends who you talk to. I called Shimano America and the guy said they are due in the first week of June, no mention of Europe only. I guess time will tell.

ScottM, thanks for the der. info. thumbsup

ScottM... What size big ring(s) do you have, and do you have enough chain to wrap around the big ring/ big cog?
Thx

Yep, I guess so.

I like your news better.  Hopefully I'll see it in June.

For a crankset, I'm really liking my new SLX double specific crankset.  It comes in 22-36, I'm guessing since this cassette is falling under the SLX group that they were thinking this cassette would go well with the 22-36 of the double crankset.

The front SLX double specific front der shifts from the 22 to the 36 very well, and should shift fine with a 20 to 36.  It also is much shorter so there's more room for fatter tires on 29'er bikes and bikes with short chainstays.

ScottM, it sounds like you able to use Actiontec's 36t rear cog and you're also able to switch rear cogs around. Please tell, how do you do that? All the current and recent SRAM and Shimano cogsets I've looked at appear to have the larger cogs riveted to the spider/carrier.

This is a great thread. Most threads on gearing on other sites are about how big a gear one can spin, while I'm always looking for ways to spin a lower one.

The smallest few cogs are loose.  He probably ditched one of those.

Looks like I made a mistake on the Group level.  This is actually a Deore component.

Here is a 48 tooth cog that I made The cheap megarange derailer will work on the cog but won't shift to it the pully bolt hits the cog. Shimano megarange cogset have 24 and 34 for the biggest cogs and it looks like there needs to be 10 teeth or less to shift. Shimano's normal derailers will work on a 12 36 cogset if the 36 is far enough from the dropout such as found on 160 mm rear hub spacing on tandems. If shimano makes the 36 tooth cog it will only be a matter of time until santana tandems has shimano make an 11 36 cogset with 10 gears.  http://share.ovi.com/media/currentresident.bicycle/currentresident.10073

Hi everybody
Any news on the release date of the cassette (i'm european)?

This thing sounds good for a 1x9. I tried 1x9 with a 11-32 cassette, but that 32-32 ratio on my 29er really sucked. It was too heavy for seated spinning and too light for standing. I'm wondering if the 32-36 will work on those long steep climbs

>>Hi Scott, I've just installed a 12-34 xtr with an xtr long cage.  The top pulley of course rubs on the big cog.  It actually rubbed on the big cog when I was running a 12-28, but only in the granny gear.  Now its in both granny and middle.  The 'b' screw seems to have no impact whatsoever.  I have a brand new xtr short cage, but I hesitate to install as I believe it would only get worse.  You're post above has given me renewed hope.  How'd you get the short cage to work?  Any help or words of wisdom would be much apprciated.  BTW, I'm on a 1994 Litespeed Ocoee, if that makes a difference.  Thanks.<<
