Looks like the detouring on LMR worked out well. Bryan and Phil took the detour starting right from Flag, while the rest of the crew rode to Marshall Lake before bailing. Nobody continued, so I am guessing it was pretty muddy. People varied on when they jumped back... some at the road crossing, others a little later on.
Maybe I missed it, but Bryan is going for a thru-ride. It almost looks like he missed the 'hot loop' turn up to camp one, though it's hard to say from somewhat sparse SPOT data.
Carlos from Tucson sent me a message -- he is out with mechanicals and flats. Better luck next time!
Day 2 is a big one. The HAB at the end is no joke! And no more 'official' detours...

Yes Bryan is doing a Thru Ride, we were roomies in CB last winter.
His spot is a bit off, wonder whats up. looks like a slog up Mingus.

Yeah Mingus is a slog alright.
Looked like Bryan did skip Camp 1, other then that first fun ST off the rim he really didn't miss much. Since he's not really getting a full run no matter what, I would say, if he did skip it it was a good call. Lots of great ST once you get to Sedona proper makes sense to get to the goods.
Official detour for this year, Marshall Lake to Pine Grove or Wiemer Springs road not sure it was set on the get back point. After last years start I'll say that getting to Marshall is a no brainer. Great trail at the start and you don't really get into that much of the muck. As you do get to the mud some of the trail has had crushed rock put in as fill. You get enough muck to know you want out but not so much as to spoil the day. Getting back in at PG seamed like a good idea at first but went to shit and it was enough to really get annoying. Once we got to Wiemer several of us had had enough, those who stayed on said it got better tho. Really their not missing much on Anderson Mesa and flattish trail out of PG. Unless someone really thinks they have a shot at the record I can't see dealing with all the muck.
Now on a good year even Anderson Mesa has enough goods to make it worth the hoofed out babyheaded sections.

Put me DNF, Hanging 1/2 day tomorrow in Sedona, then heading back to flag. IIC error (Idiot in Chair) loading track When it ran out I Thought I could nav by phone, but it was unworkable. Gonna come back & try solo soon.

Scott, yeah I rode with Pete from Flagstaff and we took lake Mary road from town out to ashurst/Azt. I did miss the hot loop up at camp 1, bummer but we did hang out at the overlook. Together we rode out to lime kiln on day1. Pete set up Bivy there and I pushed on through. Not sure if he's recording his time but he planning on being done Sunday. As for myself put me down as a DNF! I pulled the trigger after sycamore rim trail knowing I had a few more hours left and possibly in the dark again. I hitched a ride at I-40 into flag after 33 some hours and 200 miles of my ride, had a lot fun! Thanks for organizing and the gps track was a huge help navigating in the dark not knowing any of the route!

Great, thanks for the report, Bryan. Glad you got out for many a new mile and enjoyed your time out there.
John Schilling and Chris S. are just getting the HAB done! They've conquered Mingus. I suppose in some ways it might be better to do some of that in the dark...
Jason H looked to have been searching out a bike or outdoor shop in Sedona for some reason. That cost him some time. He's still got the whole HAB ahead of him, so it'll be a late one for him. Great to see him pushing on into the night.

You might want to put into the cues that the maverick station in cottonwood is up the hill. I lost some time rolling in there at 830 riding through town and then all the way back across town to find a circle k, didn't see the maverick station until I had already resupplied. Also on stage three 1.2, it's a left turn onto 111 not right...easy to figure out in the day but can't see as much in the dark!

Yeah, the Maverick is the last thing you hit heading out of town. I tried to make that more clear.
Thanks for the fix on the 111 turn! Definitely appreciate the feedback to keep the cues as correct as possible.

I struggled with stomach issues sat and sun and being unable to eat I found myself getting weaker and weaker. So I took the bypass to williams and I'm waiting for a shuttle back to flag. It was great meeting all the AZ racers. I hope everyone else finished strong.

Here are some of my better pics from the event: Found some mud above Lake Mary.  It seemed to be a good year for the Yucca on Schnebly hill.  My camp setup. I was very happy with my Sea to Summit poncho.  Waiting on the sunset.  Me and my horse.  Mike, before his GPS track ran out.  And you thought I was telling tall tales at the campfire. Here are the bear tracks I found.  I thought this balanced log was pretty cool.  |

Scott,
I'll send you my times even though I'm a DNF for bypassing Bill Williams, still rode 242 miles!!
I really enjoy the format of this event and am very glad I was able to participate with the group start date this year instead of a smaller week delayed start. I gives riders who are speed-deficient the opportunity to chat, talk shop with the fast folk at camp.
It was great meeting a few new faces and riding once more with the tried & true AES diehards I call my friends. Per usual, blog post forthcoming. Congrats to all who showed up for this event and huge kudos to those who knocked out the entire route.

I'm a DNF. Wish that stood for did-not-flat, but unfortunately it doesn't. After two days of tire issues, I threw in the towel in Williams. We'll chalk that one up as lesson learned. Great meeting everyone. Thats quite the route. Really enjoyed the Sedona stuff, it almost made the Lime Kiln "weed fest" more bearable. Hope to make it back and see all that I missed.
Great job to all that finished!
