Pearl Izumi X Alp Seeks are decent for short-ish distances - they're like a running shoe but with a cleat. Great for routes involving lots of walking but a bit flexy

Hey Stick!

Shimano M088 - did the kiwi brevet this year with them, good rubber sole and available in wide shoe options

Shimano MT44 - like a run shoe, good width and correct size (I have a wide foot), quick lace system

Lake MX100 - tough outer, not real breathable (tough ripstop softshell outer) but keep out debris, narrow though so have to upsize for right width

Pearlizumi X Alp IV

I'm a shoe dork and have scads of shoes, many of which were stupid expensive. These have served me extremely well whether fording dozens of rivers in Iceland, or cutting through the desert.

Currently using the Giro Terraduro and thus far I am pretty impressed.  Going on an extended trip in the Ouachita Mountains in a couple of weeks so I will have a more thorough evaluation post trip.

I rode the Freedom Challenge with the X Alp IIIs and they were great. I found with the X Alp IVs that the tongue shifts forward just enough to cause compression on the top of my foot. This will cause problems with numbness on long rides. Did you experience anything like this? Unfortunately for me I think it means I have to find another shoe.

I find Pearl Izumi's way to narrow and their sizing just too wonky.  I've had great luck with Lake shoes.  That being said, I'm trying out the Five Ten Maltese Falcon LT clipless shoes.  They look silly, but I could care less about that.  I love all my other 5.10 shoes.  They are also coming out with a sweet looking shoe in 15.

I agree, these shoes are great if your route requires alot of hike-a-bike. They are flexy and comfortable enough where you can still wear them once you make it to camp. I used these on the Divide and was happy wearing them all the time. However, they do compromise on climbing though since they are so flexy.
