We are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven.
That which we are, we are: One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate,
But strong in will.
To strive, to seek, to find.
And not to yield.

This journey we started together has evolved into a completely different race/tour for each of us based on where and when we encountered each aspect of the course. What an amazing experience for us all! Whether we finished blue or orange or were forced to scratch... we each gave all our heart, soul, mind, and body had to give. And then some. I am proud to be a part of such a humble, caring, powerful community of the world's greatest mountain bikers.
Special thanks to all those I had the opportunity to shred the trails with: Dan and Brad; Lee; Aaron;  Max and Peter; Rod and Jerry; Jason, Brett and John; Tanner and Tony; Michael and Jim; Steve, Andrew and Scott; Tricia; Jessica; and especially Eric. Without each of you my personal adventure would have been hallow. Thank you all.

Never ever yield. Never.

TD14: Eric Sime called in from Silver City. He had a muddy ride through the Gila and almost stepped on a rattlesnake!

Hi all,

I sent the enclosed out to the starter's list today. Please circulate.

Hi All,

It’s that time of year again when I start a challenge greater than attempting the Tour Divide---getting Tour Dividers to contribute stories for the Cordillera. Volume 6 – to be published around Thanksgiving—will be on the 2014 race. What a year. Looking forward to the stories.

Why Contribute?

Three reasons:

•   We are a small community of Tour Dividers and in 2010 Dave Blumenthal was killed just after Bush Mountain Lodge. We’ve used the Cordillera to raise funds for his young daughter Linnaea’s college fund and to date have raised over $9000.
•   We’ve a lot of interest in the Tour Divide after Mike’s film and the book feeds this interest. It is a collage of what happens on the Tour Divide and with each year being different records for posterity the race. I can’t wait to read the stories for 2014 as it was such a challenging year weather wise.
•   For people who want to race the Tour Divide it’s an invaluable resource for what to expect and planning how to deal with broken bikes, broken bodies and broken spirits. Oh, and for the lucky ones...finishing.

What to Contribute?

Two options.

•   The best is to write a story about what you experienced, what you felt, etc.  I’ve attached JD Paul’s story of braking his frame in NM and how he still finished on it, and Mike Arenberg  as examples. Mike’s story is a good example of why your mother told you to wash your hands after toileting—especially if you have leaking Bear Mace around!
•   Do an interview. I’ve attached a sample interview template with a few questions—as well as Oliver Whalley’s interview after 2012.

In both cases make it personal and share anecdotes. And don’t forget pictures!

What if I didn’t finish?

Welcome to the club. That was me in 2011 and 2012 before finally cracking the beast in 2013.  You still have a story to share so don’t use that as an excuse 

We also have a section for friends/family contributions under ‘Blue Dot Watchers’ so please see if they will contribute.

The Gear Survey

Please complete the online gear survey at:

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1712910/Cordillera-v6-2014-Tour-Divide-Gear-List

This forms an annex to the Cordillera and I had a lot of good feedback after last year. I’m using a fee version of Survey Gizmo so if it will not take any more entries please let me know and I’ll upgrade to the paid version.

Where/How Long/When

Please e-mail me your contribution to chris@lpcb.org. I’ll be racing the Transcontinental from 8 August so don’t expect answers during the race!

If I could have contributions sooner than later it would be great. A good way to pass the recovery time in Istanbul would be editing the Cordillera. The deadline is the end of September. Two reasons. Main one is that I want to get the book finished in time for US Thanksgiving. It’s a great Christmas present. I’m also on a business trip to the Pacific Islands for the month of October so I have time to work on it nights after work rather than having a life riding my bike or spending time with my wife.

If you can use the attached Word Files as templates it would be great. Otherwise send through a document and I’ll do my best to format it. It’s a big job and it’s helpful if you use these files as samples.

Do I Get a Free Copy

Believe it or not, this question comes up. The editor doesn’t even get one  thumbsup. Besides, it all goes to a good cause.

Please Forward This To Any Riders or Blue Dot Watchers

Not everyone puts their e-mails down on the Starter’s List so if you know of riders – or people who enjoyed watching the race – please forward to them.

I bought The Cordillera Volume 5 a few weeks ago and have been really enjoying the book.  I'm looking forward to the Volume 6.

Thank you Christopher for putting together such a great collection of stories and thank you for your efforts to create a fund for Linnaea.

Thanks for your kind feedback. It's a huge effort so nice to see that it's well received.

The credit for Linnaea's fund goes to Eric Bruntjen who was the founding editor and did Volumes 1 and 2. Paul Howard kept it going with Volume 3 then when Paul bowed out I just stepped up to keep things going. It's all a team effort, but the success most of all depends on the riders and Blue Dot Junkies sending in stories to share.

Thanks for putting together another issue of The Cordillera, Christopher. In so many respects, it represents the best side of this crazy sport. Great stories and a worthy cause. An true work of passion and love.

Chris, I think you should have a cheating story section! Call it "bending the rules"! (not!)

There are some people who say that TD is not a real MTB race. Its just a bunch of roads. No singletrack save for a few bits.

I used to beat that drum as well. Max Morris tried to convince me otherwise. David Goldberg and Marshal Bird the year before did the same thing. I wanted a triple so bad after Goldberg talked so much crap I had to try it.

Now I see with that look one gets, that hard look in the eye, the real truth. The Tour is big. Really big. So big it swallows you whole. And spits you out much tougher than you were before. Its WAAAAAAYYYY more than a bunch of dusty fireroads. Its a hidden dimension inside our crazy world. It is a special place I will never forget. The people, the places, the journey. All worth every penny and ounce of expended energy.

This picture is worth a lot. 10 years of dreaming of forest.

Thanks Mark!

Glad that Tony and I were able to crank it up through New Mexico and still hit that 30 day mark. I finally realize why you get so upset with some of the riders that don't police themselves. I'm not sure where I stand on the whole "orange" coating topic....but I do know that Trackleaders didn't code everyone correctly and wish that it worked a little better. Anyway...I had a great adventure! Weather was chaotic at best, but at least it gave me more confidence for future wet weather races. Can't wait for the AZTR next year!

Jason Snell here. Just wondering what happened to the starter list. it seems to have disappeared. I would love to be able to contact some of you Tour Dividers I might have ridden with. What happened to Shane?? It would have been cool to hang out with you longer. What happened to Ryan Lee? I didn't see you during the race you were too fast. And big congrats to Calvin whom I met in O hare airport and rode on the shuttle to Banff with. Great job!! One other thing I lost a Primal Quest Buff somewhere after Holland Lake lodge. If anybody found it, I would love to have it back sentimental value and all. I think Jeff from New Zealand but now from North or South Carolina was behind us. Maybe you found it I don't know. Please let me know if you did.

Thanks

Not sure what happened to the start list, I looked at it just the other day and it was populated, now it seems like it's blank.

I got a note from Shane after I got back and he said that altitude sickness was his undoing. He didn't end up having giardia thank goodness. Haven't gotten to speak with him at length yet. Great riding with you, memories are still flowing as I recover here in Steamboat. My bike and bags are still caught up in the Greyhound shipping system days after I'm home... hoping for the best and that they're being gentle.
