I am just curious if anyone here is doing the Oregon Outback (besides Nathan) and there thoughts on race strategy? My plan is under 32 hours.

I'm In for the Oregon Outback. I haven't studied the route much.
I'm looking at options for getting back to Klamath Falls after I finish. I'll be driving to the start from the Tahoe area. Let me know if anyone wants to share a ride. Also if anyone wants to coordinate transportation after the finish.

2B_bock, Did you get the confirmation e-mail from Donnie about the sag wagon at finish? I checked out the course on the files supplied by Donnie. I am going to get a E-trex which was suggest by Scott and upload the files to that. Luckily it will be very easy to do route cards as there aren't allot of junctions that aren't marked in the road sections to get lost on.

What are you riding, what is your time frame, and gear choices?
I think the sag is for getting to the start from Portland. I'll be traveling from CA. I have uploaded the route and don't anticipate any issues w/ loading it on my E Trex. It also looks like he has ques. I hope he contacts Matt and Scott to get us on trackleaders. I will be riding my Giant xtc w/ XX1. Not sure on what size front chainring I'll go with.

Howdy, I helped develop the route with Donnie last year.

The route is rather easy to follow. Most intersections are marked. Wayfinding shouldn't be a problem, but I'm sure lose a few folks to the dingos anyway. There really isn't *that* much climbing. The section between Prineville and Shaniko has by far the most, and 2 of the big climbs in there are paved and decent grades. I rode the whole thing with an 8sp Alfine and walked on one short section.

Sag support: VeloDirt isn't providing any. But Amtrak provides a sweet train ride between Portland and Klamath Falls. And Portland Sag Wagon is offering some shuttle services during the ride: http://www.portlandsagwagon.com/Site/Blog/Entries/2014/3/1_Oregon_Outback.html

Make both those reservations ASAP, and remind Amtrak that you are one of a couple hundred people that will need to ship a bike that day.

Also, highly recommended is Cowboy Dinner Tree. Which requires reservations as well. I'm not saying it's impossible to do the Oregon Outback without a 30oz steak in your belly, just that it will be much, much harder.

There's a group of a half-dozen or so of us from San Francisco (including a tandem!) planning on doing this. I'm not sure of what we've come up with in terms of Klamath Falls return. I'll find out and report back.

It varies a lot and quite frequently as well. I walked a fair bit here and there on 700x35c tires. The gravel is very shitty in places. Total gravel trail miles on the OC&E is about 60 I think.

It's a rail trail so an even grade and not technical, but very loose and deep. Fat tires. Knobbies not as important.

HI there I am interested in doing a short section of the trail from Brothers to Fort Rock to get my feet wet as my first bikepacking trial. Can anyone tell me what I can expect in that section?? Thanks.
