First riders into Patagonia ~4hrs...Whoa!! Now the strategies begin, stop & re-supply or push on?

Hopefully it's just a SPOT issue with Carlos, almost 2 hrs w/o an update. Go Alexis!! Caroline!!

A dry breeze will be pushing them from Patagonia to Sonoita.  A warm 90 degrees here in Patagonia currently.  I can't imagine passing through town without grabbing some water for the blacktop trip to Sonoita.

Whoa looks like Kurt passed a resupply to take the lead. Interesting to see how this plays out. Neil seems to be riding strong.

I'd have to make a guess that the Kaibab Plateau singletrack is open for business at the moment given how mild of a winter AZ has received. Anyone been up there recently to confirm/deny this conjecture?

Mark, Scott may beg to differ on the Kaibab!! It was snowing up there when they went through last week!! I'd love to see the riders stay on the AZT if possible though.

Kaibab got some fresh snow just last week.  We were up there.  Still some decent old snow coverage in the highest spots, too. That detour is still in play, though staying on the AZT is certainly more doable than usual.

Thanks for creating the thread.  Everyone's off on a toasty and dry day.  There are some mercy clouds floating about in Southern AZ.  Hopefully they are enough to keep our riders from getting too crazy hot.

We've got about 15 in the AZT 750 and 30 in the AZT 300.  I'll chime back in with some more commentary later on.

I stand corrected. The Kaibab Plateau truly goes against any preconceived notions of Arizona being a desert wasteland. Hopefully some of the Northbound 750 riders are able to ride some of the singletrack up there as it's pretty primo (in fair conditions that is). I can't say I'd be all that motivated to ride more singletrack after pedaling from the AZ/Mexico border and doing a Rim to Rim with a bike on my back though...

Yeah, being able to take the highway is a blessing after the canyon carry.  I think I'm the only one that's been lucky / foolish enough to ride the trail (my 2005 ITT was in the fall).  It's good trail (at least outside the park it is), but there are still HAB sections and lots of downed trees.  Getting on/off and carrying your bike over trees is pretty unpleasant when your legs are shredded from the carry...

It's all too easy to forget the mental and physical battles that go down while attempting to ride/race the AZT when you're watching the race unfold from the comfort of your armchair. It's also fun to make grand plans for a ride only to be humbled by the sheer difficulty of the adventure merely hours into the trek.

Enough of my philosophical rants...

Looks like a majority of the pack is through the "butter smooth and unlimited traction" singletrack of the Canelos.

"butter smooth and unlimited traction" - an apt description for the Canelos.

One thing is certain - the Canelos dealt out some punishment, especially at these temps.

The lead pack of Aaron, Kurt and Neil are right at record pace.  If you're cooking, you can finish up the nasties of Las Colinas with the last waning light.  They are just getting to the climbing where it's about an ~hour to the "magic" green gate.  That'd be right around sunset.

JayP is following behind in 4th overall, leading the 750ers.  He's carrying a Trace SPOT unit mounted on his top tube (without a real clear view of the sky) so is getting some erratic readings, bouncing a bit, but always near the track.

In the ladies, we have Jen Judge off the front, Anna and Alexis climbing into the Santa Ritas, and Caroline leading the 750ers, just leaving Sonoita.

Hot afternoons lead to beautiful evenings and primo night riding.  With a nearly full moon, there will be some blissful AZT shredding going on out there.

Anyone heard about Jill Hueckman?  This is race one of three for her Triple-Crown attempt.  I'm ASSUMING her SPOT isn't updating (hasn't for over 3 hours).  Does anyone know how she's doing?

Not sure why her SPOT hasn't updated.  She did have it mounted sideways in the pic of her bike she posted, but it was tracking decently well earlier.

Leaders are *right* at Aaron's pace from last year.  Almost down to the minute!  Crazy.

To go sub-48, they'll need keep at it and minimize errors/delays in the latter half of the race, but they're off to a solid start.

Can't wait to check the tracker in the AM.  Night 1 is where it all goes down.

Aaron Denberg is heading south on HWY 83, back to Sonoita.  He went out fast.  Hope everything is ok.

Hang in there Mark!! The heat took its toll on quite a few riders y'day, but it's good to see Jill's SPOT on the move. Meanwhile, the lead trio is holding that blistering pace, already on the ascent of Mt. Lemmon!!
